Freiheit Country Store Honored With Texas Treasure Business Award in Comal County
Long before the neighborhoods and commercial development that now surround FM 1101, Freiheit Country Store was already part of the local landscape. Now the longtime New Braunfels-area business has received recognition for the history it has carried forward.
Comal County Commissioners Court recognized Freiheit Country Store with the Texas Historical Commission's Texas Treasure Business Award on Sept. 24, adding the business to a growing list of longtime Comal County establishments receiving the historical designation.
More Than a Century in the New Braunfels Area
Freiheit Country Store traces its roots to 1889, when the surrounding Freiheit community looked very different from the fast-growing part of New Braunfels residents know today. The establishment has long served as a gathering place and is located at 2157 FM1101, New Braunfels, TX 78130.
Its staying power is part of what makes the recognition notable. Businesses can come and go quickly in a growing region, but places such as Freiheit often become landmarks in their own right. Over time, the country store evolved into a destination known for burgers, live music and a relaxed setting while retaining its connection to the area's past.
The Texas Treasure Business Award is a Texas Historical Commission recognition associated with businesses that have made longstanding contributions to their communities. Comal County has recognized several local establishments through the program, making it a way of documenting commercial history that can otherwise disappear as communities change.
A Familiar Place in a Changing Part of Comal County
That history feels particularly relevant along FM 1101 today. New homes, businesses and road improvements have changed the surrounding area, bringing thousands of newer residents into a part of Comal County that once felt decidedly rural.
Freiheit Country Store's recognition offers a reminder that some of the places people pass every day have stories stretching back well before the subdivisions around them. For longtime residents, it is recognition of a familiar local institution. For newer neighbors, it is an invitation to learn a little more about the community they now call home.
