Free Rookie Responders Class with Fulshear Police Department Prepares Young Drivers for Road Safety and Traffic Stops

November 20 2024

The Fulshear Police Department is offering a unique opportunity for new and soon-to-be drivers to gain essential road safety skills through its Rookie Responders class. This free, one-hour interactive session, set for Wednesday, December 11, 2024, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the Fulshear City Hall Municipal Complex, aims to prepare young drivers for the challenges they may face on the road. The class will cover crucial topics such as handling traffic stops with confidence, understanding the dangers of distracted driving, and learning how to interact with law enforcement if pulled over.

With young drivers facing higher risks on the road, training and education are vital. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of unintentional death for 15- to 24-year-olds in 2020. In 2021, over 2,100 drivers aged 15 to 20 were killed in crashes, and more than 200,000 were injured. Despite making up just 5.1% of licensed drivers in the U.S., this age group was involved in 8.5% of all fatal crashes and 12.6% of all crashes. These statistics highlight the urgent need for proactive education to help young drivers navigate the dangers of the road.

During the Rookie Responders class, participants will learn how to handle traffic stops safely and respectfully—an essential skill to ensure a positive interaction with law enforcement. Additionally, the class will focus on the risks of distracted driving, a leading cause of accidents among young drivers, and provide practical advice on how to avoid distractions while driving. The class will feature engaging video content and real-life scenarios, offering an interactive learning experience that equips young drivers with valuable knowledge they can apply immediately.

This session is perfect for new drivers, and parents are welcome to attend, though not required. Space is limited, with only six spots remaining for the December 11 class. To reserve a spot, email Captain Mike McCoy at mmccoy@fulsheartexas.gov. Don’t miss this chance to give your young driver the tools they need to stay safe on the road and avoid common driving pitfalls!
