For Fort Bend County residents ready to make the most of the fall growing season, one of the area’s most anticipated gardening sales is returning with vegetables and herbs selected specifically with local growing conditions in mind.

The Fort Bend County Master Gardeners Fall Vegetable & Herb Plant Sale will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Bud O’Shieles Community Center, located at 1330 Band Road in Rosenberg. Organizers encourage shoppers to arrive early for the best selection.

The sale is more than an opportunity to pick up a few plants for the backyard. For gardeners who have ever stood in front of rows of seedlings wondering which varieties can actually handle Fort Bend County weather, soil and growing conditions, the event offers a more locally focused starting point.

Vegetables and Herbs Chosen for Fort Bend County

Plants available at the fall sale are varieties either recommended for Fort Bend County by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service or grown successfully by Master Gardener volunteers in their own home gardens.

The selection is expected to stretch from cool-season vegetables such as broccoli and Swiss chard to herbs including chamomile, thyme and other choices suited to fall gardens.

Behind the scenes, volunteers are already getting those plants ready. Master Gardener Deb Volkers, for example, has been labeling French thyme plants in preparation for the October sale.

That hands-on preparation is part of what makes the event especially useful for new gardeners as well as longtime growers. Instead of choosing plants based solely on what is available at a garden center, shoppers can focus on varieties selected with the Fort Bend County growing environment in mind.

Who Are the Fort Bend County Master Gardeners?

The Fort Bend County Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who work with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension to provide residents with research-based horticultural information. The organization has served the county for decades, certifying its first class of Master Gardeners in November 1990.

Their work reaches well beyond plant sales. Master Gardeners answer residents' gardening questions, teach classes, maintain demonstration and teaching gardens, work with young gardeners, participate in community programs and help homeowners find reliable information about landscaping, vegetables, trees, insects and other horticultural topics.

The broader Texas Master Gardener program is built around community volunteers receiving specialized horticultural training and then sharing that knowledge through their local Texas A&M AgriLife Extension offices.

That local connection matters in a county where gardeners contend with Gulf Coast heat, humidity, heavy rains, occasional freezes and growing conditions that can make advice developed for other parts of the country less useful.

Plant Purchases Help Support Local Gardening Education

There is also a community benefit attached to each purchase.

Proceeds from the Fort Bend County Master Gardeners' plant sales support Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's mission in Fort Bend County and the Master Gardeners' educational programs. The organization says the money is used to provide research-based horticultural education to residents throughout the year and is not used to compensate volunteers.

Plant sales are the organization's primary source of income and help support programs, demonstration gardens and other educational efforts available to the community.

For residents, that means buying a tray of broccoli or a few pots of herbs can help fund the same local gardening resources they may turn to later when a tomato plant struggles, a lawn develops an unfamiliar problem or a new landscaping project raises questions.

What Fort Bend County Gardeners Should Know Before the Sale

The sale runs from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Bud O’Shieles Community Center, 1330 Band Road in Rosenberg. Because quantities and varieties are limited, the Master Gardeners recommend arriving early for the strongest selection.

Gardeners can also make the most of the trip by taking a quick look at their garden before heading out. Knowing how much sun a planting area receives, how much space is available and what is already growing nearby can make it easier to choose vegetables and herbs that have room to thrive.
