Fort Bend County Lifts Burn Ban Amid Improved Weather Conditions

November 08 2024

Fort Bend County has officially lifted its outdoor burn ban, effective November 8, 2024, following significant improvements in weather conditions and a notable decrease in fire risk.

The decision was made after a period of increased rainfall, cooler temperatures, and a significant drop in the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI), which assesses fire danger based on moisture levels in soil and vegetation. As of today, the county's average KBDI stands at 297, indicating a decrease in fire risk. The KBDI index ranges from 0 (indicating no moisture depletion) to 800 (representing severe dryness), and the average reading of 297 shows that the fire danger has dropped significantly from previous levels.

The burn ban, which had been in place since October 8, 2024, was enacted due to extreme heat and dry conditions that had elevated the risk of wildfires in unincorporated areas of the county. At the time the ban was implemented, the KBDI had reached a dangerously high level of 654, prompting local authorities to restrict outdoor burning in order to protect public safety.

With improved conditions, the Fort Bend County Fire Marshal, in consultation with County Judge KP George, recommended the rescinding of the ban. "The combination of recent rain, lower temperatures, and the KBDI decrease has significantly reduced the risk of fire in the area, making it safe to lift the burn ban," said the County Fire Marshal.

As a result, residents in unincorporated areas of Fort Bend County are now permitted to resume outdoor burning activities, including burning trash, campfires, and other similar activities, provided that they adhere to fire safety guidelines and exercise caution.

Authorities remind residents to continue to be mindful of fire safety and to follow local regulations when conducting outdoor burning. The burn ban could be reinstated if future conditions warrant, and residents are encouraged to stay updated on any potential changes in fire safety regulations.

For more information on fire safety and local regulations, residents can contact the Fort Bend County Fire Marshal’s Office.
