Fort Bend County and UH Enhance Commuter Service with New Stop at UH Main Campus
Fort Bend County and the University of Houston (UH) have announced a strategic collaboration to significantly improve the Downtown Commuter service, specifically designed for the convenience of Fort Bend County students. The new initiative includes a new stop at the UH Main campus, offering a smoother and more efficient commute for students located in the downtown Houston area. Effective September 3, 2024, the newly added stop also promises an affordable transit solution for students commuting from Sugar Land to their classes at a fare of just $4 each way.
Jay Neal, the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Chief Operating Officer for UH at Sugar Land, acknowledged the immense value of this partnership, saying, "We're very grateful for this partnership that will allow our students to pursue their academic goals in Sugar Land and on the UH main campus." Neal also elaborated on how this collaboration exemplifies community support, a fundamental propellant for growth and success in the region.
The existing schedule will be unaffected by the addition of this new stop, ensuring the continued punctuality and convenience that passengers have come to rely on. Fort Bend County Judge K.P. George applauded both parties for their cooperative efforts, emphasizing how this expansion will "open up valuable educational opportunities for our commuter students in Fort Bend County."
Fort Bend Transit (FBT), who is a part of this collaboration, was established in 2005 after the Fort Bend County Commissioners Court approved the creation of the Fort Bend County Public Transportation Department. The department, now known as FBT, aims to deliver safe and efficient public transportation services. FBT offers passenger trips within Fort Bend and Harris Counties through Demand Response and Commuter Park and Ride services. Demand Response provides curb-to-curb rides across Fort Bend County, while Commuter Park and Ride serves weekday routes to the Texas Medical Center, Greenway Plaza and Downtown Houston from designated lots in Rosenberg and Sugar Land.
Sharing her enthusiasm about this collaborative venture, Perri D'Armond, Transit Director for Fort Bend County, said, "We are thrilled to partner with the University of Houston to provide this added convenience for students. This new stop will make commuting to the UH main campus more accessible for those living in Fort Bend County, supporting their academic success."
