Goodwill Houston Opens New Katy Firethorne Store, Its First New Location in Nearly Eight Years
For Katy-area families looking to stretch a household budget, donate gently used belongings or hunt for an unexpected secondhand find, a new option has opened along the Spring Green Boulevard corridor.
Goodwill Houston officially opened its new Katy Firethorne store on July 24, 2026, at 1711 Spring Green Blvd., Suite 100, near the Firethorne and west Katy communities. The grand opening marked the nonprofit organization’s first new store opening in nearly eight years.
The approximately 9,251-square-foot store is located in the Shops at Katy Reserve near the intersection of FM 1463 and Spring Green Boulevard, a rapidly developing area surrounded by growing neighborhoods, schools and new commercial activity.
“Katy, thank you for celebrating with us,” Goodwill Houston shared following the opening. “We had an incredible time welcoming the community to the Grand Opening of our new Katy Firethorne store.”
The celebration included shopping, giveaways, refreshments and special promotions as residents explored the newly stocked sales floor.
New Thrift Shopping and Donation Option for West Katy
The Goodwill Katy Firethorne store carries a rotating selection of donated clothing, shoes, household goods, books, accessories and other secondhand merchandise. Because much of the inventory comes directly from community donations, the selection can change from one visit to the next.
That unpredictability is part of the appeal for thrift shoppers. One person may be searching for affordable back-to-school clothing, while another may be furnishing a first apartment, looking for work attire or hoping to uncover a vintage item that cannot be found in a traditional retail store.
“Our new Katy Firethorne store is officially open,” Goodwill Houston announced. “Stop by to explore fresh treasures, discover unique finds, and shop great values.”
The store is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday through Sunday. Thursday hours are 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to Goodwill Houston’s official location listing.
The Firethorne location joins other Goodwill Houston operations serving the Katy area, including the Katy Kingsland store, the Katy Ranch location and donation centers near Cinco Ranch and Cross Creek Ranch. Goodwill Houston operates more than 100 stores and donation locations across the Greater Houston region.
How Goodwill Differs From a Traditional Resale Shop
At first glance, Goodwill may look like another resale or thrift store. Its business model, however, is built around a broader nonprofit purpose.
Traditional resale shops may purchase merchandise from individuals and resell it for profit. Goodwill primarily receives donated goods, sorts those items and sells suitable merchandise in its stores or through online channels. Revenue from those sales helps fund employment services, career coaching, job-search assistance, training programs and other community-based resources.
In practical terms, a donated jacket, lamp or set of dishes can serve more than one purpose. The item is kept in use rather than immediately discarded, a shopper gains access to an affordable product, and the sale contributes to programs designed to help people prepare for and secure employment.

The larger Goodwill movement traces its beginnings to 1902, when donated household goods and clothing were collected, repaired and sold to generate wages and employment opportunities. The model later expanded to include education, job training and career services.
Goodwill Houston began serving the Greater Houston area in 1945. Over the decades, it developed a network of stores, donation centers and employment programs centered on helping people overcome traditional barriers to work.
Nationally, Goodwill is not one single retail corporation operating every store from a central office. It is a network of locally operated nonprofit organizations that respond to the employment and workforce needs of their individual communities. Goodwill Industries International reported that its network includes more than 150 local organizations and thousands of retail and outlet stores across North America.
That local structure means purchases and donations made through Goodwill Houston support services within the Greater Houston region rather than simply generating revenue for a conventional resale chain.
