Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner Passes Away, Leaving a Legacy of Public Service

March 05 2025

The city of Houston is mourning the loss of former Mayor and U.S. Congressman Sylvester Turner, who passed away at the age of 70 due to prolonged health complications. Turner died at 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, just hours after attending President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night, according to a statement from his family.

A Legacy of Leadership and Service

Turner’s career in public service spanned decades, cementing his place as a pillar of leadership in Texas politics. He was elected as Houston’s mayor in 2015, serving two terms from 2016 to 2024, following 27 years in the Texas House of Representatives representing District 139 from 1989 to 2016. Just months before his passing, Turner won the race for Texas’ 18th Congressional District, stepping out of a brief retirement to fill the seat left vacant by Sheila Jackson Lee.

Raised in Acres Homes, Turner overcame humble beginnings to achieve academic and professional success, graduating valedictorian of Klein High School in 1973, earning a political science degree from the University of Houston in 1977, and later attending Harvard Law School, where he specialized in corporate and commercial law.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire reflected on Turner’s deep ties to the community, stating, “Sylvester Turner was the proud son of Acres Homes who rose to meet with presidents, kings, and queens, yet he never forgot where he came from. We didn’t always agree politically, but we never took things personally. I’ve lost a friend, and our community has lost a true public servant. There will never be another Sylvester Turner.”

Whitmire announced that flags on City of Houston buildings have been lowered to half-staff, and that City Hall will be illuminated in red, white, and blue to honor Turner’s legacy. Further plans to celebrate his contributions to Houston will be announced in the coming days.

A Life of Advocacy and Resilience

Turner’s leadership was marked by his efforts to improve city infrastructure, address flooding, expand public safety measures, and advocate for historically underserved communities. His mayoral tenure was tested early when he led Houston through Hurricane Harvey in 2017, one of the most devastating natural disasters in the city's history. He later navigated the city through the COVID-19 pandemic and championed initiatives such as gun buyback programs, transportation reform, and Vision Zero, a traffic safety initiative aimed at reducing pedestrian fatalities.

His impact extended beyond Houston. Fort Bend County Commissioner Dexter L. McCoy spoke about Turner’s role as a mentor and role model, saying, “If a Black kid from Acres Homes could go on to be mayor of the fourth-largest city in America and a member of Congress, so could we. Today, many of us have lost a mentor and friend. His sage advice from decades of public service has guided me and countless other leaders in our community.”

McCoy recalled seeking Turner’s guidance while launching the African American Memorial Conservancy, noting that despite his busy schedule, Turner readily offered support and wisdom.

A Courageous Battle with Cancer

In 2022, Turner publicly revealed that he had been battling osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, after doctors discovered a tumor on his jaw during a routine dental visit. He declared himself cancer-free by the end of that year.

Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones emphasized his unwavering commitment to service, stating, “Congressman Turner didn’t just serve—he united. He didn’t just lead—he inspired. He knew that real change happens when people come together, roll up their sleeves, and do the hard work. His legacy will resonate for generations.” Briones highlighted Turner’s belief that every Houstonian deserves a fair shot, a principle he carried throughout his career.

Honoring a Public Servant

Beyond politics, Turner’s presence in the community was deeply felt. His campaign for Congress focused on police accountability, hurricane recovery efforts, cancer cluster investigations in Houston’s Fifth Ward, and education reform. He worked tirelessly to reduce inequality in public schools and pass gun reform legislation.

Mayor Whitmire encouraged Houstonians to reflect on Turner’s contributions, stating, “I hope that, in his memory, we all come together and remember that what unites us is far greater than what divides us.” As the city prepares to honor his life, Turner’s enduring legacy remains in the hearts of the people he served.
