First Responders Honored at Katy First Responders Dinner

December 22 2023

In a moving display of appreciation and recognition, the American Legion Post 164 in Katy recently celebrated the extraordinary efforts, dedication, and commitment of its local first responders. The annual Katy First Responders Awards & Dinner boasted an atmosphere of heartfelt gratitude and camaraderie, a vivid testament to the close-knit community that Katy is known for.

Corporal Janie Melara, a vital part of the Katy Police Department since March 2008, was honored with the prestigious Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award. Her diligent management of the property room and outstanding defensive tactics training efforts, particularly her work with women and college-bound young ladies, have made a significant impact.

The Paramedic of the Year Award was presented to Jacob Yezak, an esteemed member of the Fire Department since January 2018. Whether it's his role as a firefighter training officer, driver operator, or paramedic, Yezak has shown nothing short of exceptional dedication. And his skills don't stop there - Yezak's talents stretch to agricultural tractor operation, welding, pipe-laying, and more.

Edison Saunders, with his unwavering commitment to excellence, was presented with the Firefighter of the Year Award. Since joining the Katy Fire Department in June 2017, Lieutenant Saunders demonstrated an exceptional proficiency that quickly led him to the rank of Engine Operator and eventually, Lieutenant. His contributions to the department's growth and operational effectiveness have been significant and long-lasting.

Katy is a city that takes pride in the everyday heroes protecting the community. It's not just about recognizing their work, but celebrating the individuals behind the badges and uniforms, their multi-faceted skills, and their unyielding dedication.
