Firethorne Firefish Swim Team Announces 2024 Swim Season Registration

Founded in 2011, the Firefish Swim Team was organized to provide our children with the opportunity to participate in a quality competitive summer swimming program, which will provide personal growth, self-esteem, enjoyment, and introduce them to the life-long health benefits of the sport of swimming. The sport will be taught in a fun environment while nurturing a competitive attitude at the individuals own rate.

Firefish considers all swimmers as equal and integral members of our team. Our success is ultimately measured by how much opportunity we provide for the youth of our community and by how much their individual potential is maximized. The building of positive attitudes, healthy bodies, disciplined minds and enduring friendships are among the rewards our program strives to offer to those who join. We will be competing in the WHALe league (West Houston Aquatic League).

Registration Fees

Registration Fees for the 2024 season will be as follows:

• $150 - first swimmer per family
• $140 - second swimmer per family
• $125 - all remaining swimmers per family

Registration fee goes towards: coaching salaries, t-shirts (1 per swimmer), swim cap (1 per swimmer), WHALE fee (insurance), end of year trophy and awards.

Swimmers 15-18 yrs old

Swimmers 15-18 years old will only pay a $35 registration fee (to cover WHALE Fee and T-Shirt) and their parents will not be required to fulfill any volunteer commitments unless they have younger children on the team as well. We encourage 15-18 year old's to invite their non-resident friends to come and swim for our team.

Volunteer Commitment
In addition to the registration fee, each family is required to submit a separate $250.00 check as a volunteer commitment (This check will be held until the end of season and will be shredded upon completion of volunteer commitment.) Each family will be required to volunteer in order to be eligible for registration the following season.  Please see the "Volunteering" section to read about our volunteer policy.

Swim Team Eligibility

1. A swimmer must be a resident of Firethorne Subdivision who is in good standing with the homeowners association. Non Firethorne residents may also apply if there are any spots available after registration for residents is complete.
2. When registering for our team, returning families take priority over new families to our team. A returning swimmer is one that swam for our team the entire season previous to this one and that fulfilled all of their volunteer requirements.
3. A swimmer must be at least 4 years old, but not older than 18 years of age as of May 1, 2024. No exceptions will be made.  If requested, you may be required to provide proof of your swimmers age. 
4. A swimmer may participate in USA Swimming and WHALe without restriction.
5. All swimmers must be able to swim at least one length of the competitive swim pool independently to be eligible to remain on our swim team. All new swimmers to the team will be required to demonstrate ability on the first 2 days of practice.
6. A swimmer must compete in a minimum of 50% (two out of four, or 3 out of 5) of the scheduled inter-league dual meets in order compete in the Meet of Champs and also to be eligible for priority registration the following season.
7. The Firethorne Firefish swim team reserves the right to cap age groups at a certain number of swimmers for safety reasons.
8. While swimming for the Firethorne Firefish, swimmers may not practice with or compete for other WHALe teams.
9. Swim Team is not a Learn to Swim Program. While coaches will teach strokes, dives and turns, swimmers are expected to have a basic knowledge of the strokes and be comfortable remaining in the water independently.  If in doubt, it is highly recommended that swim lessons be taken before joining. Stroke requirements are as follows:
   • 4-6 Age Group
     • Freestyle swim must be able to get across length of pool without any assistance or panic.
   • 7-8 Age Group
     • Freestyle swim must be able to get across length of pool without any assistance or panic.  Should also know Backstroke.
   • 9-10 Age Group
     • Confident Freestyle and Backstroke swim across the length of the pool. Preferred to know at least Butterfly or Breaststroke.
   • 11-18 Age Groups
     • Confident Freestyle and Backstroke swim across the length of the pool. Should know at least Butterfly or Breaststroke.
