Discover Volunteer Opportunities in Fort Bend County and Make a Difference at the George Memorial Library Volunteer Fair

December 31 2024

George Memorial Library, part of the Fort Bend County Libraries system, will hold a Volunteer Fair on Monday, January 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at its Richmond location, 1001 Golfview. The event aims to connect teens and adults with local organizations seeking volunteers, highlighting opportunities to make a difference in the community.

Volunteering offers substantial benefits not only to the community but also to volunteers themselves. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), volunteering can significantly improve mental health by reducing stress, combating depression, and fostering social connections. Engaging in volunteer activities has been linked to increased feelings of purpose and accomplishment, as well as lower rates of anxiety and loneliness. These positive effects on mental health make volunteering a mutually beneficial act of kindness and growth.

At the Volunteer Fair, representatives from various organizations will share their missions, programs, and volunteer roles. Among the participants are Lunches of Love, which addresses childhood hunger by providing free meals during school breaks; Serve Sugar Land, which facilitates community service projects within city departments; and the Fort Bend Women’s Center, a nonprofit offering support and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Additional attendees include Long Acres Ranch, focusing on outdoor education and conservation; East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry, which offers food and financial support to those in need; and Reining Strength Therapeutic Horsemanship, a program that uses equine-assisted activities to benefit individuals with disabilities. Fort Bend County Libraries will also showcase opportunities to assist with library programs and events.

This free, come-and-go event is open to all members of the public. For more information, visit the Fort Bend County Libraries website at www.fortbend.lib.tx.us or call George Memorial Library at 281-342-4455
