Cy-Fair ISD Earns Eighth Consecutive 'Best Communities for Music Education' Distinction
The Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD) has once again been named one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, marking the eighth consecutive year it has received the prestigious designation. The award honors more than 900 school districts nationwide that demonstrate an unwavering commitment to providing comprehensive music education to all students.
This recognition is not simply a trophy for the district’s shelf. It symbolizes years of intentional investment in student opportunity, creativity, and whole-child development. “Receiving this honor reaffirms CFISD’s place as a leader in music education,” said Joe Glass, coordinator of secondary music. “It highlights the passion of our students, the dedication of our teachers and our ongoing commitment to excellence. I believe CFISD is setting the standard for districts across the nation.”
Music Education’s Proven Impact
The value of music education extends far beyond the stage or classroom. According to the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation, students involved in music programs are more likely to graduate high school, score higher on standardized tests, and demonstrate enhanced cognitive and social skills. In fact, NAMM reports that schools with music programs have a 90.2% graduation rate, compared to 72.9% in schools without them.

Similarly, the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) underscores music education’s impact on overall academic performance and student well-being. Their research shows that students in music programs consistently outperform their peers in math, reading, and SAT scores. For instance, in 2023, Texas All-State music students had an average SAT score of 1296, significantly higher than the national average of 1028 and the Texas average of 978.
A Community-Fueled Commitment
To qualify for the Best Communities designation, CFISD underwent a rigorous evaluation process. The district responded to detailed questions about funding, instructional hours, graduation requirements, and the scope of its music offerings—from kindergarten to high school band, orchestra, and choir. Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
Behind the accolades is a strong foundation of community and educator support. “We are deeply honored to be recognized as one of the Best Communities for Music Education,” said Elaine Waier, coordinator of elementary music and physical education. “This achievement reflects the unwavering support of our community, the exceptional dedication of our educators and the remarkable talents of our students. Music plays a powerful role in the lives of children, and we are proud to see it celebrated.”

A Vibrant and Inclusive Music Program
CFISD’s music education framework is one of the most robust in Texas, encompassing a wide range of academic and performance opportunities across all grade levels. The district’s Fine Arts Department offers a full continuum of music instruction, including general music for elementary students and specialized programs in band, choir, and orchestra starting in middle school. By high school, students can pursue advanced musical pathways including jazz band, chamber ensembles, and competitive marching and concert performances.
In addition to in-school opportunities, CFISD supports student growth through enrichment initiatives such as the CFISD Summer Music Camps. Registration is now open for the 2025 sessions, which include specialized camps in band, jazz ensemble, orchestra, and choir. These camps offer students the chance to refine their skills, explore new instruments, and connect with fellow young musicians in a dynamic, supportive environment. Parents and students can learn more and register through My Neighborhood News.
Sustaining a Culture of Excellence
From performing at state competitions to learning the basics of rhythm and song in early childhood, CFISD students benefit from a diverse and inclusive music curriculum that reaches over 115,000 students across 90 campuses. The district’s approach aims to ensure that music is not treated as an extracurricular afterthought but as an essential element of a child’s education.

And the research backs this up. According to NAMM, music education contributes to increased empathy, collaboration, and discipline—skills that translate directly into workforce readiness and lifelong success. CFISD’s music programs not only help cultivate musicians but also nurture tomorrow’s leaders, problem solvers, and compassionate citizens.
CFISD maintains a focus on providing music education as part of its broader academic offerings, making music accessible to all students. And thanks to this shared vision—held by teachers, parents, and administrators alike—thousands of students are discovering their creativity and personal expression, their confidence, and their community through music.
