Harris County Master Gardeners 2026 Spring Plant Sales: Where Houston Gardeners Can Find Tomatoes, Herbs and Expert Advice

March 05 2026

For many Houston-area gardeners, spring doesn’t truly begin until the Harris County Master Gardener Association Spring Plant Sales arrive. The highly anticipated annual events connect residents with locally recommended plants, expert gardening advice and an opportunity to support community horticulture programs across Harris County.

In 2026, the Harris County Master Gardener Association (HCMGA)—a nonprofit affiliated with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service—will host two major public plant sales featuring tomatoes, vegetables, herbs and perennials carefully selected for the Gulf Coast climate. The events also serve as the organization’s primary fundraiser, supporting educational and community gardening initiatives throughout the region.

For homeowners, families and gardening enthusiasts across the Houston, Cypress, Tomball, Katy and greater Harris County areas, the sales offer something rare: plants proven to thrive locally, paired with knowledgeable volunteers ready to answer questions and help gardeners succeed.

Why the Harris County Master Gardener Plant Sales Matter

Beyond the plants themselves, the sales play an important role in funding research-based horticulture education programs delivered through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.

The Harris County Master Gardener Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, uses proceeds from the plant sales to support programs that serve residents across the county. These include youth education initiatives like Cylinder Gardening, public demonstration gardens, and community projects such as the Genoa Friendship Gardens in Houston.

By purchasing plants at the sales, residents are helping sustain programs designed to make gardening knowledge accessible throughout the community.

Over the years, the events have grown into popular regional gatherings, drawing thousands of visitors annually from across Harris County and surrounding areas.

Many attendees return year after year, often citing the same reason: the chance to learn directly from trained Master Gardeners while choosing plants suited for the region’s challenging climate.

What Makes the Plant Sales Unique

While plant sales are common in spring, the Harris County Master Gardener sales stand apart because of the expertise available on-site.

Certified Master Gardeners complete extensive horticultural training through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and volunteer their time to share practical, science-based gardening knowledge with the public.

Visitors often say the ability to ask questions directly from trained volunteers is one of the event’s biggest benefits.

“Master Gardeners have a solid reputation for offering great plants at reasonable prices.”

“Master Gardeners were kind, helpful and answered my gardening questions right there at the sale!”

“When you buy plants, there are Master Gardeners on-hand to tell you where your plant will thrive, how to care for it and what to do for long-lasting healthy plants.”

“Master Gardeners can help with bugs, pests and other problems in your garden.”

That guidance can be especially valuable in the Houston region’s unique growing conditions, where heat, humidity, soil composition and pests can challenge even experienced gardeners.

A Long History of Gardening Education in Texas

The Texas Master Gardener program traces its roots back to the late 1970s, when Texas A&M horticulture specialists introduced the volunteer education model to help meet growing demand for gardening advice across the state.

Harris County launched its program in 1984, and today it remains one of the largest Master Gardener programs in Texas. Volunteers undergo extensive horticultural training—often completing 50 hours of coursework and at least 50 hours of volunteer service—before becoming certified.

Across Texas, Master Gardeners contribute hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours each year answering gardening questions, supporting school garden programs, maintaining demonstration gardens and assisting with community education.

The Harris County program reflects the broader mission of the statewide movement: sharing reliable, research-based gardening knowledge while strengthening communities through volunteer service.

What Happens Next for Local Gardeners
