Commissioner Tom Ramsey's Office Celebrates Reopening of Mercer Visitor Center

January 19 2023

The Visitor Center at Mercer Botanic Gardens is now open to guests after undergoing significant reconstruction to repair damage caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Over the course of four decades, the Mercer Visitor Center has served as a welcoming hub for educational gardening activities and events. With its reopening, the Center boasts even more updates for guests to enjoy as they visit one of southeast Texas’ most renowned botanic gardens.

“Mercer Botanic Gardens is one of the crown jewels of our park system in Harris County,” said Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom S. Ramsey. “The Precinct 3 engineering team did what they do best by maintaining the integrity and history of the original 1986 visitor center while also incorporating technology and design updates to meet today’s standards. It’s been quite the journey to get to this point, and we strive to build on the legacy of this park and create spaces people can visit and peacefully enjoy.”

There’s no shortage of natural lighting in the 3,100-square-foot facility, which features additional windows in the meeting room. The $875,000 project also includes the installation of new flooring, an open lobby area, a modernized kitchen, and attic space for storage. The entire facility can host up to 70 people.

Mercer Botanic Gardens is a 180-acre park located at 22306 Aldine Westfield Road in Humble. Visitors can explore and admire gardens of bamboo, color displays, daylilies, endangered species, ferns, gingers, herbs, tropicals, and more.
