Commissioner Lesley Briones Invites Artists to Transform Harris County Precinct 4 Buses

March 20 2025

Harris County Precinct 4 is giving local artists a chance to make their mark on the community through a unique Bus Design Contest. Commissioner Lesley Briones is inviting artists from across Precinct 4 to submit their designs for a chance to have their artwork displayed on the county’s bus fleet. These buses provide free day trips for older residents, serve as cooling and warming centers during disasters, and transport supplies, making them a visible and essential part of the community.

A Moving Canvas for Local Artists

Commissioner Briones is spearheading this initiative to beautify public spaces and celebrate local talent. “Art has the power to bring communities together, and what better way to showcase local creativity than by displaying it on our buses that travel across Harris County,” said Briones. “These buses are more than just a mode of transportation—they represent connection, resilience, and the vibrancy of our communities.”

Artists interested in participating must submit their designs by April 17, 2025. The contest is open to all Precinct 4 residents, and submissions can be made online at this submission link.

Art on the Move: A Tradition Continues

This initiative follows the success of last year’s contest, where students from seven school districts—Alief ISD, Cypress Fairbanks ISD, Houston ISD, Katy ISD, Spring Branch ISD, Waller ISD, and Tomball ISD—had the opportunity to design artwork under the theme, “The History of and Unity in Harris County.”

In September 2024, Commissioner Briones unveiled the winning designs at Garland McMeans Junior High School, where a group of young artists saw their work come to life on a community bus for the first time. “Seeing our students’ art displayed on these buses is a testament to the creativity and diversity of our county,” said Briones. “It’s an incredible way to highlight our history and showcase the talent within our school districts.”

The winning submissions celebrated the cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and influential changemakers of Harris County. More than a dozen student artists had their artwork incorporated into the design of seven buses, transforming the fleet into a traveling gallery of local expression and history.

Why Public Art Matters

Public art projects like the Precinct 4 Bus Design Contest play a crucial role in fostering community engagement, cultural appreciation, and local pride. Studies from Americans for the Arts indicate that public art contributes to economic vitality, community identity, and mental well-being by making spaces more inviting and reflective of the people who live there.

“Public art isn’t just about beautification—it’s about creating a shared sense of place,” said Briones. “Through this contest, we are giving artists a chance to contribute to something meaningful that reaches thousands of people every day.”

Join the Movement: Submit Your Artwork

Commissioner Briones encourages all eligible artists to take part in this exciting opportunity. The buses serve a vital role in connecting residents, providing emergency relief, and enriching lives through community outings, making this project not just about aesthetics, but also about function and service.
