Chinese-Puerto Rican Fusion Restaurant Opens Second Location in Katy

February 01 2024

Renowned Houston-area restaurant Michy’s Chino Boricua is expanding its flavorful footprint with the opening of its second location in Katy. This family-owned and operated eatery has its roots firmly entrenched in a captivating story of immigration, cultural integration, and a taste for fusion cuisine. Behind this unique restaurant is Houston transplant Michelle Lao, fondly known as Michy.

Since its inception in 1992 in Puerto Rico, Michy’s has been serving its customers a distinct blend of Chinese and Puerto Rican flavors, a combination they affectionately term "Chino Boricua". Inspired by her family's journey from China to Puerto Rico, and then to Houston, Michy infuses a sense of home and a celebration of diversity into every meal served.

Growing up in the picturesque town of Corozal, Michy's youth was a blending of cultural experiences, working at her parents' first restaurant, Fu Hou, and savoring the beautiful Puerto Rican outdoors. Today, she has successfully translated these experiences into a gastronomic delight for her customers.

When Michy's family relocated to Houston, they were warmly welcomed into its diverse community. In May 2021, they responded to this acceptance by setting up their first restaurant in Houston, thus adding their distinct Chino Boricua style to the city's vibrant culinary scene.

Michy's first location at 2424 Greenhouse Road became an instant hit with locals and tourists alike, offering fast, casual, and tantalizing dishes like boneless BBQ ribs, orange chicken, carne frita, and their signature fried chicken. With over 1,000 reviews on Google and an average rating of 4.6 stars, Michy's is certainly doing something right in the kitchen.

On January 20th, a thematic grand opening that honored Chino Boricua heritage was held for Michy's second location at 806 Katy Fort Bend Road in Katy. The event, which featured traditional lion dancers and a raffle, saw a gathering of dedicated patrons and enthusiastic supporters, all eager for a taste of Michy's famed cooking.

Whether you grab a bite on the go or choose to dine at one of Michy's cozy locations, you can be sure that every meal is an authentic taste of this unique cultural fusion. Michy, with her heartfelt thanks, extends a warm invitation to come and experience the Chino Boricua style.
