Bank Jugging on the Rise: Harris County Sheriff's Office Urges Shoppers to Stay Alert This Holiday Season

Bank Jugging on the Rise: Harris County Sheriff's Office Urges Shoppers to Stay Alert This Holiday Season

November 13 2025

With the holiday season in full swing, residents of Highland Trails and across Harris County are being urged to stay alert as incidents of "bank jugging" continue to rise. The Harris County Sheriff's Office has issued renewed warnings and safety tips to help protect families as they head to malls, banks, and busy shopping centers in preparation for gift-giving, travel, and festivities.

What is Bank Jugging?

Bank jugging is a type of surveillance-based theft. Criminals watch individuals make cash withdrawals at banks or ATMs, then follow them—often without their knowledge—to another location where they steal the money, either through car burglaries or direct confrontation. Victims are frequently targeted in parking lots, grocery stores, or even at home.

“Jugging” can happen in seconds and typically involves suspects working in teams. They may watch for individuals who exit a bank with cash envelopes, money bags, or deposit slips, and strike once the victim lets their guard down.

Bank Jugging Prevention Tips from HCSO

To stay safe, especially during the busy holiday season, the Harris County Sheriff's Office offers these key tips:

Be Aware of Your Surroundings
  • Look for suspicious behavior or individuals who appear to be watching you inside or outside the bank.
  • Don’t hesitate to leave and notify authorities if you feel uneasy.
Avoid Large Withdrawals
  • Unless absolutely necessary, avoid withdrawing large amounts of cash.
  • If you must, try to have a second person with you and make the stop your final destination.

Secure Your Money Immediately
  • Don’t flash cash or count it in public.
  • Put it away discreetly before leaving the teller window or ATM.
Don’t Leave Cash in Your Vehicle
  • Always secure packages and money in the trunk or take them with you.
  • Visible valuables in cars are a prime target for thieves.
    • Remember: Criminals don't know an empty bag is empty. Even empty bags need to be hidden or taken with you.
If You Think You're Being Followed
  • Do not go home.
  • Drive to a public location such as a busy shopping center or, ideally, your nearest police station.
Report Suspicious Behavior
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels off, call the Harris County Sheriff's Office non-emergency line at 713-221-6000 or dial 911 in case of emergency.

Holiday Shopping Safety Tips for Families

In addition to bank jugging concerns, the Sheriff's Office also reminds shoppers to keep general safety in mind as retail centers become more crowded. Their Holiday Shopping Safety Tips include helpful reminders that make it easier to stay aware and prepared during the rush:

  • Hide, Lock, Take: Always hide your belongings, lock your car, and take your keys with you.

  • Be Alert: Carry purses close to your body and wallets in front pockets to deter pickpockets.

  • Avoid Night Shopping Alone: If possible, shop during the day. If you must go at night, park in well-lit areas and walk with others.

  • Secure Packages: Don’t make multiple trips to your car with gifts. Thieves may be watching parking lots for easy opportunities.

  • Protect Your Identity: Use secure websites for online shopping, and never share passwords or respond to unsolicited messages asking you to “verify” personal information.

Shopping with Children? Plan Ahead.

If you're heading to the store with kids, plan what to do if you get separated. Teach them how to recognize store employees and make sure they know your contact information. Never leave children unattended in a car or store—even for a moment.

With the increase in bank jugging and other crimes of opportunity during the holidays, awareness is your best defense. By staying vigilant and following these tips from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, families in Highland Trails can help make this a safe and joyful season for all.
