Applebee’s Planned for Former Fuddrucker’s Site in Copperfield, Replacing Earlier Fuzzy’s Taco Shop Plans

May 21 2026

A well-known restaurant property along Highway 6 in the Copperfield area that many longtime residents remember for burgers and family dinners is preparing for a different kind of comeback.

The former Fuddrucker’s building at 7250 Highway 6 North in Houston is now expected to become an Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill + Bar, replacing earlier reports that the site would house a new Fuzzy’s Taco Shop location. The change marks another shift for one of the most recognizable restaurant properties in northwest Houston and signals renewed investment along the busy Highway 6 corridor near Copperfield, Hearthstone and Cypress.

For residents who have watched the property sit vacant since Fuddrucker’s closed in 2024, the new direction represents more than just another restaurant opening. It brings back a nationally recognized casual dining brand that already has history in the area and could help reactivate a longtime neighborhood gathering spot.

A Familiar Brand Returns to the Copperfield Area

Applebee’s is not entirely new to northwest Houston residents. A previous Applebee’s operated nearby at 19821 Northwest Freeway near US 290 and FM 1960 (now Black Bear Diner), close to Texas Roadhouse, serving families, sports fans and neighborhood diners for years.

The planned Copperfield-area restaurant would give local residents another nearby sit-down dining option at a time when many suburban communities continue seeing redevelopment of older restaurant sites rather than entirely new construction.

Known for its casual atmosphere, affordable menu options and family-friendly environment, Applebee’s has built its identity around the idea of being a neighborhood restaurant where residents can gather for lunch, dinner, happy hour and community connection.

The company describes itself as a “come-as-you-are welcoming environment,” a message that has helped the brand remain one of the largest casual dining chains in the world with more than 1,500 locations across the United States and internationally.

From Fuddrucker’s to Applebee’s

The Copperfield property carries a great deal of familiarity for longtime residents.

Fuddrucker’s had operated at the Highway 6 location for years before closing in mid-2024 amid broader closures affecting several Houston-area locations. Since then, the building has remained empty, becoming one of the more noticeable vacancies in the area’s restaurant landscape.

Earlier this year, permit activity and renovation plans initially pointed to a Fuzzy’s Taco Shop opening at the site. My Neighborhood News previously reported that the former Fuddrucker’s building was expected to become a “Fuzzy’s Tacos & Margs” location featuring Baja-style tacos, margaritas and a redesigned patio atmosphere.

That plan now appears to have changed, with Applebee’s instead slated to move into the property.

Interestingly, both brands are connected through Dine Brands Global, the parent company that owns Applebee’s, IHOP and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. That relationship may have contributed to confusion surrounding the property’s future as redevelopment discussions evolved.

Applebee’s History Reflects the Evolution of Casual Dining

Applebee’s traces its roots back to 1980, when Bill and T.J. Palmer opened the first restaurant in Decatur, Georgia under the original name T.J. Applebee’s Rx for Edibles & Elixirs.

Over the next four decades, the company expanded rapidly across the country, becoming a staple of suburban dining culture throughout the 1990s and 2000s. The chain introduced recognizable features including its signature Brewtus® beer glass, Carside To Go service and later nationwide delivery and mobile ordering.

In recent years, Applebee’s has continued evolving its business model to compete in a changing restaurant industry, adding pickup windows, expanded digital ordering and modernized restaurant designs while maintaining its neighborhood-focused branding.

The company also experienced renewed pop culture attention in 2021 when country artist Walker Hayes’ viral song “Fancy Like” prominently featured Applebee’s in its lyrics and marketing campaigns.

What Residents Could Expect

While an official opening timeline for the Copperfield-area Applebee’s has not yet been announced, redevelopment of the property would likely include interior renovations and updates to the longtime restaurant building.

Applebee’s locations typically feature a full-service dining room, bar area, sports televisions, online ordering and takeout service, along with menu items ranging from burgers and steaks to appetizers, salads, pasta and cocktails.

For nearby residents, the project could also help increase activity at a corridor that has experienced several restaurant closures and transitions over the past few years, including Black Rifle Coffee in the former Boston Market location, just in front of the upcoming Applebee's in Copperfield.

In growing suburban areas like Copperfield and Cypress, redevelopment of existing commercial properties often plays an important role in maintaining economic momentum while giving residents additional dining and gathering options close to home.

What Happens Next

Exterior renovations at the former Fuddrucker’s site appear to be complete or nearing completion, signaling that the project may be entering its final stages. However, an official grand opening date and formal announcements from Applebee’s have not yet been released.

As redevelopment continues along Highway 6 in northwest Houston, the return of a recognizable national brand to the property may bring renewed attention — and new traffic — to a corner many residents have associated with neighborhood dining for decades.

Residents can stay tuned to My Neighborhood News for updates on opening timelines, renovations and future restaurant developments across the Copperfield and Cypress area.
