Healthy Kids Running Series Returns to Cypress for Five Weeks of Fall 2026 Family Races

For many children, the most important race is not against the runner beside them. It is the personal challenge of reaching the finish line, trying something new and discovering what they can accomplish.

That supportive spirit will return to northwest Houston this fall as the Healthy Kids Running Series – Cypress hosts five Sunday races for children in Pre-K through eighth grade. The Fall 2026 season will take place Nov. 15, Nov. 22, Nov. 29, Dec. 6 and Dec. 13 at the D. Bradley McWilliams YMCA at Cypress Creek, located at 19915 State Highway 249 in Houston.

Each race begins at 4 p.m.

The youth running program gives Cypress families an organized and welcoming way to spend time outdoors while helping children develop healthy habits, confidence and friendships. Children do not need previous racing experience to participate, making the series accessible to both first-time runners and young athletes who already enjoy competitive events.

“We want to give every child the chance to feel accomplished and celebrate their success,” Alyson White, community coordinator for the HKRS Cypress team, said during the series’ 2025 season. “This is about building healthy habits and confidence, one race at a time.”

Age-Appropriate Races Help Every Child Find a Starting Line

Healthy Kids Running Series was founded in 2009 to encourage active lifestyles through positive, age-appropriate running events. Each local series is held once a week for five weeks during the spring and fall.

Rather than placing children of widely different ages into the same event, the Cypress youth running series offers distances designed for each developmental stage. Events include 50- and 75-yard dashes for younger children, along with quarter-mile, half-mile and one-mile races for elementary and middle school students.

The Fall 2026 divisions include:

  • Pre-K 50-yard dash
  • Pre-K 75-yard dash
  • Kindergarten and first grade
  • Second and third grade
  • Fourth and fifth grade
  • Sixth through eighth grade
  • Challenger Division

Runners earn points based on their finish in each weekly race, giving children an opportunity to track their progress throughout the season. Trophies will be presented to the top overall boys and girls in each age division, while every participant will receive a medal during the fifth and final week.

For families, the emphasis extends beyond finishing order. The five-week format allows children to become more comfortable at the starting line, celebrate improvements and return each week to a familiar group of runners, parents and volunteers.

Challenger Division Expands Access for Children With Disabilities

The Healthy Kids Running Series Cypress program will again include a Challenger Division, an adaptive 75-yard event for children with disabilities or special needs.

Parents, siblings and friends may accompany Challenger runners on the course to provide encouragement and physical support. Participants may also use assistive devices such as braces, crutches or wheelchairs.

The division reflects the organization’s broader focus on inclusion by creating a race-day environment in which more children can participate alongside their peers and experience the recognition that comes with completing a course.

Fall 2026 Registration, Pricing and Race-Day Details

Full-series registration includes all five races, weekly race bibs, a Healthy Kids Running Series shirt, a finisher medal and sponsor giveaways.

The listed full-season registration price is $48.70, including the processing fee. Families who register by Oct. 25 can receive a $5 discount.

Full-series registration is nonrefundable and nontransferable.

Single-day walk-up registration will also be available beginning one hour before each race for $16.90, including the processing fee. Walk-up registration covers one race and does not include an event shirt, official series scoring or overall results.

Single-day runners may later upgrade to full-series registration to receive scoring and a shirt for races held after the upgrade.

Families can register through the official Healthy Kids Running Series Cypress page on RunSignup.

Referral Program Can Reduce Registration Costs

Registered families will receive a personalized referral link that can be shared with friends and relatives by email or social media.

Families who refer three additional runners who complete registration will automatically receive a $10 refund. Those who reach six total referrals will receive an additional $15 refund, creating the possibility of earning $25 back from the registration cost.

The program also gives children an opportunity to invite classmates, neighbors and friends to participate, helping the five-week series become a shared community experience rather than a one-day athletic event.

Cypress Volunteers and Local Business Sponsors Needed

The Fall 2026 Healthy Kids Running Series is also seeking volunteers to assist during one or all five race days.

High school and college students may receive documentation for service hours, and organizers can provide letters of reference. Volunteer roles offer students and other community members a way to support young runners while helping the races operate smoothly.

Local businesses may also participate through sponsorship opportunities that provide recognition among Cypress-area families while supporting the program’s mission of encouraging children to stay active.

Volunteer and sponsorship inquiries can be directed to cypresstx@healthykidsrs.org

What Cypress Families Should Know

The Fall 2026 Healthy Kids Running Series – Cypress, TX will be held at 4 p.m. on five consecutive Sundays beginning Nov. 15 and continuing through Dec. 13.

The location at the D. Bradley McWilliams YMCA at Cypress Creek makes the series accessible to families across Cypress, Champions, Willowbrook and surrounding northwest Houston communities. While the program introduces children to running, its broader value is found in the weekly moments surrounding the race: families cheering near the finish line, children returning after a difficult week and young runners realizing they are capable of more than they expected.

For children who are hesitant to participate in organized sports, a short race can provide an approachable starting point. For experienced runners, the series offers structured competition and the chance to measure progress over five weeks.

Families can learn more or register through the Healthy Kids Running Series Fall 2026 Cypress registration page. Questions may be emailed to the race director at cypresstx@healthykidsrs.org
