Your Home Security Camera Can Help Solve Crimes in Your Neighborhood and Across Harris County

December 09 2025

If you have a home security camera, you already know the peace of mind it can bring. But what you might not know is that your camera could help solve crimes in your neighborhood—and across Harris County—through the SafeCam program, a year-round community safety initiative from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).

SafeCam is a voluntary registration program that gives HCSO a way to contact you if a crime happens near your property. If you’ve got exterior surveillance cameras, you can register their location with HCSO so investigators know who to reach out to when they’re looking for video evidence. You’re always in control of your footage, and rest assured, HCSO will never have access to your system without your permission.

This program is active throughout the year, but now—during the holiday season—it’s an especially important reminder of how residents and law enforcement can work together to keep our neighborhoods safe.

A Helpful Reminder During the Holidays

While SafeCam is not new, highlighting the program during the holiday season is a timely way to raise awareness. Crimes like package thefts, car break-ins, and home burglaries tend to spike during this time of year. Why? A few reasons:

  • Porch deliveries increase—making packages easy targets for so-called "porch pirates."
  • People travel more, leaving homes temporarily unoccupied.
  • Financial stress during the holidays may contribute to an uptick in criminal activity.

These seasonal factors make community-driven safety tools like SafeCam even more relevant. Your camera might capture critical evidence that leads to an arrest—or even helps prevent the next crime.

How SafeCam Works

Participating is easy, free, and takes only a few minutes. When you register your security camera, you're simply providing the location of your cameras and your contact information. If a crime occurs in your area, HCSO may reach out to ask whether you’re willing to share any relevant footage.

  • You are never required to share footage
  • HCSO cannot access your camera without your consent
  • Your information stays private and secure

You can register multiple cameras across your home or business properties. And if your situation changes, you can remove your registration at any time.

Register at harriscountyso.org/Services/SafeCam or email cameraregistration@sheriff.hctx.net to get signed up.

Why SafeCam Benefits Everyone

This program isn’t just for tech-savvy homeowners—it’s for anyone who wants to be part of a safer community. Here's why SafeCam makes a real difference:

  • For You: If a crime occurs nearby, your camera could hold the key to solving it—and you won’t need to appear in court if the footage speaks for itself.
  • For Your Neighborhood: A visible network of cameras helps deter criminal activity.
  • For Harris County: SafeCam supports more efficient investigations and stronger partnerships between residents and deputies.

According to HCSO, footage shared by registered participants has helped solve everything from burglaries to assaults—sometimes even leading to faster arrests and stronger cases.
