Westlake / Westlake Forest Drainage Work Expected to Wrap Up by End of September

Westlake / Westlake Forest Drainage Work Expected to Wrap Up by End of September

Westlake / Westlake Forest  /
August 21 2026

For Westlake / Westlake Forest residents who have spent recent weeks navigating construction zones, barricades and changing road conditions, there is encouraging news: the neighborhood’s drainage expansion is expected to be completed by the end of September.

The updated timeline brings the project closer to the finish line after months of work aimed at improving how quickly stormwater can move away from neighborhood streets during heavy rainfall.

In the meantime, residents are being asked to use extra caution while driving through construction areas and when passing other vehicles on neighborhood streets. Crews, equipment and temporary roadway conditions may continue to affect normal traffic patterns until the remaining work is finished.

A Drainage Project Designed to Address Street Flooding

As My Neighborhood News previously reported, the Westlake Forest drainage improvements are part of an approximately $11 million Harris County Precinct 4 drainage initiative addressing recurring drainage concerns in six Northwest Harris County neighborhoods: Northglen, Sheffield, Silvermill, Westfield, Westlake Forest and Windsong.

The larger initiative is expected to benefit more than 10,000 residents and provide additional flood protection for more than 3,100 homes. Improvements across the project areas include larger reinforced-concrete drainage pipes, box culverts, additional underground storm drains and roadway repairs associated with the construction.

For Westlake / Westlake Forest, the focus has been on increasing drainage capacity. When an underground storm sewer system cannot carry water away quickly enough during intense rainfall, water can collect in neighborhood streets even before nearby creeks or bayous overflow.

Larger drainage infrastructure is intended to move more stormwater through the system at one time, helping streets drain more efficiently and reducing the potential for localized street flooding. The improvements cannot eliminate flood risk entirely, particularly during extreme weather, but they are designed to address one of the drainage challenges residents experience closest to home.

A Few More Weeks of Construction Caution

With completion now anticipated by the end of September, Westlake / Westlake Forest residents may still encounter construction activity and temporary street impacts as crews finish the neighborhood drainage work and associated roadway repairs.

That makes patience and caution especially important during the final stretch. Drivers should slow down near active work areas, watch for workers and equipment, follow posted traffic directions and take particular care when passing vehicles where construction has narrowed the usable roadway.

For residents who have adjusted daily routines around the project, the approaching completion date also offers a clearer picture of when neighborhood streets may begin returning to normal.

Once construction is complete, the real test of the improvements will come during future periods of heavy rain.

The goal is simple but important: give the neighborhood drainage system more capacity to move water away from residential streets and help familiar trouble spots drain more effectively.

Until the work is finished, residents are encouraged to continue giving construction crews room to work and to drive carefully through affected streets.
