Vintage Thrills on Stage: Hitchcock Radio Play Debuts at Stageworks Theatre in Northwest Houston
A classic era of suspense will echo through the halls of Stageworks Theatre this weekend as Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play opens on the Garza Mainstage in Northwest Houston. The production, running from June 6 through June 22, invites audiences to step into the golden age of radio with a unique theatrical experience filled with intrigue, espionage, and immersive nostalgia.
Adapted by Joe Landry and directed by Kevyn Eddy, Vintage Hitchcock is a triple feature of the Master of Suspense’s early thrillers—The Lodger, Sabotage, and The 39 Steps—reimagined as a 1940s radio broadcast. Complete with old-fashioned live foley sound effects, quick-change voice acting, and vintage commercials, the show transforms the stage into what The Atlanta Journal praised as “a well-oiled machine of actors reaching for noise-making props while portraying a nerve-shattering array of characters.”
But this isn’t just a play—it’s a full-fledged event. For the first time, Stageworks Theatre is incorporating immersive pre-show elements. Ticketholders are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes early to enjoy 1940s-themed festivities, including cocktails in the lobby, a WBFR Studios tour, and mingling with the cast in character.
“Spies, murder, love—it’s everything you’d expect from Hitchcock, brought to life in a new way that truly engages all the senses,” said director Kevyn Eddy. “This show is a celebration of vintage storytelling and theatrical innovation.”
A Theatre with Community Roots and Artistic Vision
Stageworks Theatre, located at 10760 Grant Road, has been a cornerstone of the Northwest Houston arts community since 2005. Originally founded as a small community troupe, the theatre has grown into a professional nonprofit arts organization offering year-round programming for audiences of all ages. Its mission is to entertain, inspire, and educate through high-quality theatrical productions, youth arts education, and community outreach.
Why Live Theatre Matters
In an increasingly digital world, the magic of live theatre—especially inventive productions like Vintage Hitchcock—offers irreplaceable benefits. According to a report from the National Endowment for the Arts, attending live theatre promotes empathy, social connection, and cognitive engagement. Harvard Health also notes that shared cultural experiences like live performances can reduce stress and build a greater sense of community.
“Being in a room with live actors, where anything can happen—it’s exhilarating. Add in the creativity of a live radio format, and it’s unlike anything else you can do on a Friday night,” said Eddy.
