University of Houston-Downtown Expands Criminal Justice Program to Northwest Houston, With Classes Planned for Spring 2027
For students in Spring, Klein, Tomball, Cypress and surrounding northwest Houston communities who are considering a career in law enforcement, criminal investigations or public service, a new educational opportunity is taking shape closer to home.
The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is expanding its Criminal Justice Program at UHD Northwest, located inside Lone Star College-University Park along Highway 249. The expansion is scheduled for spring 2027, with registration opening October 29, 2026, for eligible students.
University leaders joined the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 14, 2026, celebrating the expanded program and its potential to help local residents pursue four-year degrees while remaining connected to their families, jobs and communities.
For working adults, community college students and those already employed in public safety, the expansion offers another option for continuing their education without the added commute to downtown Houston.
UHD Criminal Justice Program Expands in Northwest Houston to Meet Regional Needs
UHD Northwest is not a new campus. Established in 2010, the university's off-campus instructional site operates within Lone Star College-University Park at 20515 Highway 249 in Houston.
What is changing is the university's criminal justice presence at that location.
The expansion is intended to increase course offerings, strengthen student engagement and create closer connections between higher education and the workforce needs of northwest Houston.
Jaime Thomas, executive director of Off-Campus at UHD, explained the university's approach in comments reported by Community Impact.
“By rebuilding our Criminal Justice presence at UHD Northwest, we can make it more convenient for students in the region to pursue their educational goals while strengthening our partnership with Lone Star College–University Park and engaging with local community and industry partners,” Thomas said.
The location is particularly relevant for students who attend Lone Star College and want to continue working toward a bachelor's degree. Having UHD coursework available at University Park can help simplify the transition from community college to a four-year university, depending on individual degree requirements and course availability.
“We recognize the importance of understanding community needs and creating pathways that help students progress from community college to a bachelor's degree and into meaningful careers,” Thomas said.
The expansion is also part of a broader effort to make university education more accessible to residents whose employment, family responsibilities or transportation needs may make traditional campus attendance difficult.
What Can Students Study in UHD's Criminal Justice Program?
The University of Houston-Downtown has a long history in criminal justice education. According to the university, criminal justice became its first four-year degree program in 1974 and later its first master's degree program.
Today, UHD's Department of Criminal Justice and Social Work offers undergraduate and graduate educational pathways that prepare students to better understand the criminal justice system and pursue careers in related fields.
Students studying criminal justice may explore subjects connected to criminal law, policing, corrections, courts, investigations and the role of public institutions in maintaining community safety.
Potential career paths include law enforcement, probation and corrections, criminal investigations, victim services, court administration and other public service positions. Individual jobs may require additional certifications, specialized training or professional qualifications.
The university's goal is not simply to offer more classes but to build a lasting criminal justice program presence in northwest Houston.
“Our goal is to build a stronger, sustainable Criminal Justice presence through increased course offerings and student engagement,” Thomas said.
For students evaluating criminal justice degrees near Spring, Klein or Tomball, the Northwest location adds another local option worth considering alongside existing community college and university pathways.
Internship Opportunities Could Help Students Prepare for Criminal Justice Careers
One of the notable elements discussed during the October 14 ribbon cutting was the university's intention to connect classroom education with professional experience.
Clete Snell, chair of UHD's Department of Criminal Justice and Social Work and a professor of criminal justice, said the expanded program will include internship opportunities designed to help students gain experience and establish connections with potential employers before graduation.
For students pursuing careers in law enforcement, investigations, corrections or related public service fields, internships can offer valuable exposure to the everyday responsibilities of those professions.
They can also help students determine which area of criminal justice best fits their interests and long-term career goals.
“A high-quality criminal justice degree from UHD is now available close to where our students live and work. So our field is changing. The field of criminal justice is changing, and so is our program,” Snell said during the ceremony, according to Community Impact.
Although internships may help students develop professional connections, participation does not guarantee employment after graduation.
Why the UHD Northwest Expansion Matters for Local Families and Working Adults
For many northwest Houston residents, deciding to pursue a college degree involves more than selecting a major. It often means figuring out how to manage tuition, transportation, work schedules and family responsibilities.
A university program located near home can remove at least one of those obstacles.
Students living in Spring, Klein, Tomball, Cypress and the Willowbrook area may find UHD Northwest more convenient than traveling to the university's downtown Houston campus. Its location within Lone Star College-University Park also offers a familiar setting for students who have already completed coursework through the Lone Star College system.
The criminal justice expansion could be particularly useful for residents who want to advance within their current profession, complete a bachelor's degree after attending community college or explore a new career in public safety.
It also brings attention to the educational pathways available within the community itself. As northwest Houston continues to grow, accessible university programs can help residents pursue career goals while remaining close to the places where they live and work.

A Closer Connection Between Education and Community Careers
