Texas A&M–San Antonio Launches 'La Familia Parent Program' to Help Families Navigate College Admissions and Scholarships

Texas A&M–San Antonio Launches 'La Familia Parent Program' to Help Families Navigate College Admissions and Scholarships

March 11 2026

For many families, the path to college can feel overwhelming—filled with applications, financial aid forms, and scholarship deadlines. A program from Texas A&M University–San Antonio is designed to help parents like those in Southwest Independent School District navigate that journey with confidence while opening doors to higher education opportunities for their students.

The La Familia Parent Program at Texas A&M–San Antonio offers a free, six-week virtual workshop series focused on helping parents of high school juniors and seniors understand the college admissions process, financial aid options, and scholarship opportunities. The program is open to families across Bexar County, including those in Southwest ISD, and begins March 25 with weekly online sessions.

For families planning the next step after graduation, the program provides practical guidance on how parents can actively support their students as they prepare for college.

Supporting Parents as Partners in the College Process

The La Familia Parent Workshops focus on equipping parents with the tools and knowledge needed to help their students succeed in pursuing higher education.

Through weekly online sessions, participants will learn how to:

  • Support their student through college and scholarship applications
  • Understand the financial aid process and FAFSA
  • Build a college-ready home environment
  • Help students stay organized during the college preparation process

The workshops are designed specifically for parents of 11th and 12th grade students, providing insight into the steps families should be taking now as graduation approaches.

For many Southwest ISD families, the program offers an opportunity to better understand how the college process works—while also strengthening communication and planning between parents and students.

Scholarship Opportunity for Participating Families

One of the program’s most significant benefits is the scholarship opportunity tied to participation.

Parents who complete the six-part La Familia workshop series will qualify their student for a one-time $2,500 scholarship to attend Texas A&M University–San Antonio.

The scholarship is intended to encourage college enrollment while recognizing the effort families put into preparing for higher education together.

Because seats in the program are limited, participation is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Free Virtual Sessions Begin March 25

The La Familia Parent Program will begin March 25 and run weekly online, allowing parents to participate from home. Each session will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., making it accessible for working families and those balancing busy evening schedules.

By offering the program virtually, Texas A&M–San Antonio hopes to remove barriers and make college preparation resources more accessible to families throughout Bexar County and Southwest ISD communities.

Parents interested in registering can do so through the program’s online registration link or by contacting the university’s Parent Outreach office at parent.outreach@tamusa.edu or 210-784-1433 for additional information.

Why Programs Like This Matter for Local Families

College access initiatives like the La Familia Parent Program play an important role in helping families better understand the steps required to pursue higher education. For many parents—especially those navigating the college process for the first time—having clear guidance and community support can make a meaningful difference.

By focusing on parents as partners in the college journey, the program reflects a growing effort among universities to engage families earlier in the admissions process and strengthen pathways from local school districts like Southwest ISD to regional universities such as Texas A&M–San Antonio.

What Happens Next

Families interested in participating are encouraged to register soon, as workshop seats are limited.

For parents of high school juniors and seniors, the program provides an opportunity to start planning now—before application deadlines arrive—and ensure students are prepared to pursue college and scholarship opportunities.

Southwest ISD families looking to learn more about the La Familia Parent Program, Texas A&M–San Antonio scholarships, or college preparation resources in Bexar County can contact the university’s Parent Outreach office or register through the program’s online portal.
