Terry Black’s Barbecue Sets Sept. 15 Opening in New Braunfels After $5 Million Transformation

Morningside Trails  /

The wait is almost over for New Braunfels barbecue fans.

Terry Black’s Barbecue is scheduled to open its new New Braunfels location on Tuesday, Sept. 15, completing a roughly $5 million transformation of the former Los Cucos Mexican Restaurant at 1310 E. Common St.

For residents who have watched the property change over the past year, the opening brings a familiar Central Texas barbecue name to one of the city’s busiest dining areas — and adds another major destination to New Braunfels’ increasingly crowded barbecue scene.

The restaurant is expected to operate from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, according to the Terry Black’s New Braunfels webpage.

Former Los Cucos Property Gets a Major Makeover

The project involved far more than changing the sign on the former Los Cucos building.

Construction crews began gutting the vacant restaurant in fall 2025. By spring, much of the old interior had been stripped away as the site was rebuilt into a much larger barbecue-focused property.

Plans called for an approximately 8,000-square-foot restaurant, a separate roughly 1,400-square-foot pit house and a two-story outdoor dining area with a covered upper deck. The renovation and expansion were estimated at approximately $5 million.

The result is a dramatically different property from the restaurant that previously occupied the site, with the pit house and outdoor gathering areas making the barbecue operation visible from the street.

For New Braunfels residents, that means the opening is not simply another restaurant taking over an existing storefront. It represents a substantial investment in the property and another large-scale dining destination along East Common Street.

What Terry Black’s Will Serve in New Braunfels

The New Braunfels restaurant will follow Terry Black’s familiar market-style barbecue format, with meats sold by the pound alongside sandwiches, traditional sides and desserts.

The current New Braunfels menu includes sliced brisket, beef ribs, pork ribs, turkey, original sausage, jalapeño cheese sausage and chopped beef. Sandwich options include brisket, chopped beef, turkey and sausage.

Sides are offered in multiple sizes, while desserts include banana pudding, peach cobbler, chocolate pudding and mini pecan pies.

Family packs designed for groups of five to 12 people are also listed, along with catering and chilled meats that can be reheated at home.

That mix could make the restaurant as relevant for family dinners and weekend gatherings as it is for visitors making a barbecue stop while traveling through New Braunfels and the Texas Hill Country.

A Texas Barbecue Family Adds Another Location

Terry Black’s traces its roots to Lockhart and the Black family’s long association with Central Texas barbecue.

The restaurant was created to honor Terry Black and the barbecue traditions he passed down to his family. Terry Black’s opened its first restaurant in Austin in 2014 and has since expanded into multiple Texas markets and beyond.

The New Braunfels restaurant will become the company’s eighth location.

Co-founder Mike Black said the company had been considering New Braunfels for some time.

“We’ve had our eye on New Braunfels for a long time,” Black said in a prepared statement. “It’s a city with deep Texas roots, a strong sense of community and a lot of energy behind it. We’re proud to plant some roots here ourselves and can’t wait to start serving New Braunfels.”

New Braunfels’ Barbecue Scene Keeps Growing

Terry Black’s arrives in a city that already has no shortage of smoked meat.

New Braunfels has gradually developed a deeper barbecue lineup of its own, ranging from longstanding local restaurants to regional and statewide brands. Its location between San Antonio, Austin and Lockhart also puts the city squarely inside one of Texas’ best-known barbecue corridors.

That makes the new opening notable even in a community accustomed to barbecue.

Terry Black’s will also open extremely close to Black’s Barbecue, another well-known restaurant tied to the extended Black family and its Lockhart barbecue history. The two restaurants are separated by only a short distance, giving diners an unusually concentrated collection of Central Texas barbecue options in the same part of New Braunfels.

For local diners, the result is ultimately more choice — and another reason the city continues to strengthen its reputation as a food destination rather than simply a stop between Austin and San Antonio.

What Residents Should Know Before Opening Day

Terry Black’s Barbecue is scheduled to open Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 1310 E. Common St., New Braunfels, TX 78130.

The restaurant’s website currently lists hours of:

  • Sunday through Thursday: 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Friday and Saturday: 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

With construction nearly finished and opening day now set, New Braunfels residents will soon get their first look inside a project that has been taking shape for almost a year.

For a city where barbecue is already part of the local identity, Terry Black’s arrival adds one more name — and one very large smokehouse — to the conversation.
