St. Vincent de Paul Parish Moves Forward With Long-Anticipated Daily Chapel Project in San Antonio
A long-awaited vision at St. Vincent de Paul Parish on San Antonio's West Side is moving closer to reality.
Plans are advancing for a new 1,400-square-foot daily chapel at the parish campus located at 4222 SW Loop 410, San Antonio, TX 78227, a project that church leaders say has been part of the parish's long-term vision for more than two decades. The privately funded project is scheduled to begin construction in July 2026 and is expected to be completed by February 2027, according to state construction records.
For parishioners, the project represents more than a new building. It fulfills a goal that has been discussed, planned, and supported by generations of church members who envisioned a dedicated space for daily worship, prayer, Eucharistic adoration, and smaller liturgical celebrations.
A Vision More Than 20 Years in the Making
The idea for a chapel originated as part of a comprehensive church master plan developed around 2000. That vision included a church addition, grotto, administration building, rectory, and eventually a dedicated chapel space. Parish leaders formed a development committee, hosted town hall meetings, and launched fundraising efforts to help bring the plan to life.
According to parish materials, more than 200 pledges were received during the initial fundraising campaign, helping establish the foundation for future campus improvements. Over the years, the chapel project experienced several delays and pauses as parish priorities and financial circumstances evolved. The project received approvals from Archdiocesan leadership at different stages, but construction was ultimately postponed multiple times before returning to active planning.
The new chapel project was previously placed on hold in 2024, but current construction filings indicate the parish is now preparing to move forward.
Creating Space for Daily Worship
When completed, the chapel will provide a dedicated location for weekday Masses, personal prayer, Eucharistic adoration, and other liturgical gatherings.
Parish leaders have described the chapel as a place where parishioners can gather in a quieter, more intimate setting while maintaining the church's focus on the Eucharist as the center of parish life. The facility is expected to serve daily worshippers, volunteers, ministry members, and parish groups seeking a dedicated prayer space.
Earlier planning documents envisioned a chapel with seating for approximately 50 to 70 people and close proximity to existing parish facilities, allowing easy access for parishioners attending services and events.
A Parish With Deep Roots in the Community
The chapel project represents the latest chapter in the history of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, which was established in 1961 by Archbishop Robert E. Lucey.
Located on a 13-acre tract donated by local builder Ray Ellison in the Valley Hi area, the parish began humbly. Before a church building existed, Masses were celebrated in homes and later at Royal Gate Elementary School. A multipurpose parish center opened in 1962, followed by the dedication of the permanent church building in 1971.
Over the decades, St. Vincent de Paul Parish has grown alongside San Antonio's expanding West Side communities. Parish membership increased from several hundred families during its early years to thousands of registered families, eventually helping give rise to additional Catholic parishes throughout the area.
Today, the parish continues its mission of worship, education, evangelization, and service, reflecting the example of its patron saint.

St. Vincent de Paul, the parish's namesake, is widely recognized as one of the Catholic Church's most influential figures in charitable service.
Born in France in 1580, he devoted his life to caring for the poor, the sick, and the marginalized. He founded charitable organizations, established hospitals and homes for vulnerable populations, and helped create religious communities dedicated to serving those in need.

According to construction filings, work on the new St. Vincent de Paul Daily Chapel is expected to begin in July 2026 with completion targeted for February 2027. The project carries an estimated construction value of $1.3 million and will be built on the existing parish campus.
