University Health Palo Alto Hospital Expansion Advances with $30 Million Build-Out, Bringing More Patient Care Capacity to San Antonio’s South Side
One of the most significant healthcare investments in San Antonio’s South Side continues to move forward as University Health prepares a $30 million expansion project that will add nearly 90,000 square feet of patient care space to the new University Health Palo Alto Hospital campus.
The project, known as the University Health Community Hospital PA – Level 5 Finish-out, represents another major step in the development of a full-service hospital designed to bring advanced healthcare services closer to residents in southern Bexar County. As the South Side continues to experience rapid residential and economic growth, community leaders have long emphasized the need for expanded access to hospital care, emergency services, specialty physicians, and maternal healthcare within the community itself.
Construction documents show the project will complete approximately 89,892 square feet of existing shell space on Level 5 of the hospital. Work is expected to begin in May 2027 and continue through May 2028.
A New Full-Service Hospital for the South Side
The expansion project is part of the larger University Health Palo Alto Hospital development, a state-of-the-art healthcare campus located at 11102 South Zarzamora Street, across from Texas A&M University-San Antonio.
Expected to open in 2027, the new hospital is being built to serve the growing healthcare needs of South Side residents while reducing the need for many families to travel across San Antonio for inpatient and specialized care.
University Health Palo Alto Hospital will open with 166 inpatient beds, with infrastructure already designed to allow future expansion to 286 beds as demand increases.
What Services Will University Health Palo Alto Hospital Offer?
When University Health Palo Alto Hospital opens, South Side residents will have access to a full-service hospital offering a broad range of medical services close to home.
Planned features include:
- A 24/7 emergency department equipped to handle urgent and critical medical needs
- Emergency care services for both adults and children
- Labor and delivery services for growing families
- A neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and nursery
- Inpatient and outpatient medical services
- Operating rooms for surgical procedures
- On-site radiology and imaging services
- Laboratory services
- Pharmacy services
- Specialized clinical departments offering advanced medical care
- Modern healthcare technology designed to support patient care and future growth
The hospital has been designed as a long-term healthcare hub for southern Bexar County, providing comprehensive care options closer to where residents live, work, and raise their families.
What the $30 Million Expansion Will Add
According to project filings, the new construction phase will transform unfinished shell space into fully operational healthcare facilities.
The project will include:
- New medical-surgical patient rooms
- Staff work areas
- Clinical support spaces
- Associated healthcare infrastructure
- New mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems
Only minimal demolition is expected, primarily involving temporary vestibules that were installed during earlier construction phases.
Once complete, the additional space will help the hospital accommodate future patient demand while supporting the long-term vision for expanded healthcare services on the South Side.
Years of Planning Becoming Reality
The Palo Alto Hospital campus has been years in the making.
Site preparation work began in 2023, followed by the hospital’s official groundbreaking in January 2024. Leaders from healthcare, government, education, and the community gathered to celebrate what many described as a transformational investment for an area that has historically had fewer healthcare resources than other parts of San Antonio.
At the time, University Health leaders emphasized that the project was about more than constructing a hospital.
“This project is rooted in our mission: expanding access to health care, developing a dynamic community hospital and supporting public health on the South Side,” University Health CEO Ed Banos said during a 2025 construction milestone celebration.
The project reached another major milestone in June 2025 when crews placed the final structural beam atop the building during a traditional topping-out ceremony.
“We’re building more than just hospitals—we’re building a healthier, stronger South Side,” Banos said.
Creating a Healthcare and Innovation Hub
The hospital is only one component of a larger healthcare ecosystem taking shape on the 68-acre campus.
Adjacent to the hospital, University Health is developing University Health Vida, a multispecialty healthcare center that will also serve as the headquarters for the University Health Institute for Public Health. The institute focuses on preventive care, community health initiatives, wellness programs, and partnerships designed to improve long-term health outcomes throughout the region.
The campus is also benefiting from a partnership between University Health and the Texas A&M University System. Nearby investments include a new College of Education and Public Health that will support healthcare workforce development, medical research, and training opportunities for future healthcare professionals.
Together, these projects are helping establish what many community leaders envision as a future medical and educational corridor on San Antonio’s South Side.
Economic Impact Beyond Healthcare
Beyond patient care, local leaders say the hospital is already helping drive broader community investment.
The Palo Alto campus is located near major economic development projects, including expanding residential communities, commercial investment, educational facilities, and major employers.
New infrastructure improvements, utility upgrades, roadway enhancements, and healthcare-related employment opportunities are expected to generate lasting economic benefits for the area.
Community advocates have also noted that improved access to healthcare can have a direct impact on quality of life by reducing travel times for appointments, improving preventive care participation, and helping residents access services earlier when health issues arise.
Why This Matters for South Side Residents
For decades, many South Side families have traveled significant distances for emergency care, specialty appointments, childbirth services, and hospital stays.
University Health Palo Alto Hospital is designed to change that reality.
The addition of emergency services, inpatient care, labor and delivery services, neonatal intensive care, specialty medical departments, and future expansion capacity means more residents will be able to receive care closer to home and within their own community.
As construction progresses and additional phases come online, the campus is expected to become a cornerstone of healthcare access for generations of South Side residents.
What Happens Next
University Health Palo Alto Hospital remains on track to open in 2027. The newly announced Level 5 finish-out project is expected to begin shortly thereafter, extending construction activity into 2028 as additional patient care areas are completed.
When finished, the project will further expand the hospital’s ability to meet the healthcare needs of one of the fastest-growing areas in San Antonio while supporting a broader vision of improved health, economic opportunity, and community investment across the South Side.
For many residents, the project represents more than a new hospital—it represents a long-awaited investment in access, convenience, and the future health of their community.
