La Michoacana Plans Major San Antonio East Side Expansion With New Grocery and Prepared Food Market
Residents on San Antonio's East Side could soon see a familiar name invest significantly in the neighborhood as La Michoacana moves forward with plans for a major supermarket buildout at 2200 E Houston St, San Antonio, TX 78202.
According to project filings, the privately funded renovation and alteration project, identified as La Michoacana #17, is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2026, with an anticipated completion date of February 28, 2027. The project carries an estimated construction value of $1.6 million and will transform approximately 13,835 square feet into a full-service supermarket offering groceries and prepared foods. The site was previously occupied by a Walgreens pharmacy.
For residents living and working near downtown San Antonio and the city's historic East Side neighborhoods, the project represents more than a building renovation. Grocery stores often serve as important community anchors, providing convenient access to fresh foods, everyday household necessities, and local employment opportunities while helping strengthen neighborhood commercial corridors.
What the Project Includes
Plans describe the project as a buildout of a supermarket designed for the sale of general groceries and prepared food. Once completed, customers can expect a shopping experience consistent with the La Michoacana brand, which combines traditional grocery offerings with specialty departments and ready-to-eat meals.
The company's stores are known for featuring fresh meat counters, produce, bakeries, taquerías, dairy products, grocery staples, household goods, and a wide selection of Mexican, Central American, and South American products.
The addition of prepared food options may also provide nearby residents, workers, and visitors with convenient dining choices in an area that continues to see ongoing investment and redevelopment activity.
A Texas Success Story Rooted in Community
La Michoacana's story began in February 1986 when a Mexican family opened a small store in Houston with a goal of serving a growing Hispanic community that was often underserved by traditional retailers.
What started as a single neighborhood store grew steadily as demand increased across Texas. Today, La Michoacana operates approximately 140 locations throughout Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Bryan, Lufkin, the Rio Grande Valley, and numerous other communities.
Throughout its growth, the company has remained closely associated with its fresh meat department, which became the foundation of the business. The retailer is widely recognized for its butcher services, marinated meats, specialty cuts, and products commonly used in traditional Mexican and Latin American cuisine.
Beyond groceries, many locations have become gathering places where families can purchase ingredients for celebrations, holiday meals, and everyday cooking while enjoying freshly prepared foods from in-store taquerías and bakeries.
What Shoppers Can Expect
While specific details about the final layout have not been released, La Michoacana stores typically feature a broad mix of departments designed to create a one-stop shopping experience.
Customers often find:
-
Fresh Meat and Seafood: The company's meat department remains its signature offering, featuring fresh cuts, marinated meats, carnitas, chicharrón, ribs, barbacoa ingredients, and other specialty products.
-
Bakery and Prepared Foods: Freshly baked bolillos, conchas, pastries, and traditional breads are staples in many locations. In-store taquerías often serve tacos, tortas, menudo, pozole, barbacoa, and other prepared meals.
-
Produce and Grocery Items: Stores generally carry fresh fruits and vegetables alongside specialty ingredients such as dried chiles, spices, tortillas, herbs, and imported grocery products popular throughout Mexico and Latin America.
-
Dairy and Specialty Products: Shoppers can typically find artisan cheeses, crema, requesón, and other traditional dairy products alongside household essentials and health and beauty items.
Why This Matters for the East Side
San Antonio's East Side continues to attract both public and private investment, with new housing, commercial projects, and infrastructure improvements helping reshape the area while maintaining its cultural identity.
The planned La Michoacana investment adds another commercial project to that broader story. Grocery stores play a critical role in neighborhood life, providing access to fresh food, supporting local jobs, generating economic activity, and creating destinations where residents regularly gather.
For families seeking authentic Mexican and Latin American products, the project could also expand access to ingredients and prepared foods that reflect the cultural traditions of many households throughout San Antonio.
What Happens Next
Construction is expected to begin in June 2026 and continue through early 2027. Once completed, the renovated supermarket will add a substantial grocery and prepared-food destination to East Houston Street.
As work progresses, residents can expect to see activity at the site as crews prepare the building for its transformation into the newest La Michoacana location serving San Antonio's East Side.
