Spring ISD Smart Start Program Shaping Early Education, School Readiness

March 05 2024

With a Dr. Seuss-themed focus on literacy and mathematics, the Spring ISD Smart Start program recently hosted its annual Read Across America event, dedicated to fostering school readiness among families through various engaging activities.

This initiative, offered by Spring ISD Family and Community Engagement as a free early childhood outreach, caters to families with preschool-age children in the Spring area. It provides complimentary services with options available in both English and Spanish, ensuring accessibility for all residents.

The event started with a lively read-aloud session, followed by eight hands-on rotation activities crafted to instill basic skills and encourage purposeful play and exploration. Parents and their children were guided through these interactive learning experiences, enhancing their educational journey together.

For Omar Aguilar, whose 2-year-old son Samuel has been enrolled in the program for the last two years, results speak volumes. Samuel has thrived under the guidance of his teacher, significantly advancing his verbal communication and social skills.

“My son really enjoys the one-on-one classes,” Aguilar said. “Samuel has learned how to communicate verbally and be more social thanks to his teacher.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Gladis Monita, a parent of two children, Adir and Adriana, said she appreciates the program's techniques on utilizing household items for educational purposes, such as teaching her kids vocabulary and games, without incurring any extra expenses.

“I love everything they teach me,” she said. “They visit my house twice a week, dedicating Tuesdays to my 2-year-old and Fridays to my 3-year-old. The best part is that they provide assistance in Spanish, while also teaching my kids English.”

Additionally, Yoselin Rodriguez, mother of three-year-old Renata, left the event with a heart full of gratitude, sharing her experience.

"I’m so thankful for the program," she said. "Renata joined at 18 months, and now, at three, she’s become so independent, smart and friendly. I couldn't be prouder."

Through personalized home visits, parents receive intensive one-on-one instruction and support, focusing on their child's healthy growth and development. To learn more about this transformative program and sign up, click here.
