Spring ISD Explores Addition of Mariachi to Fine Arts Program
Spring ISD's Performing and Visual Arts department is looking to establish a mariachi program, the first of its kind for the district.
Students will have the opportunity to learn and perform a variety of traditional mariachi music. The ensemble will include guitar, vihuela, guitarron, trumpet, violin, and voice.
“We are so excited to bring this incredible artform to the students of Spring ISD,” Spring ISD Director of Performing and Visual Arts Joe Clark said. “Music education of any kind gives students an opportunity for a creative outlet, as well as avenues to advance their critical thinking and problem solving skills. But it also allows them ways to connect with and honor the culture of our students and families.”
Mariachi students will perform at least one dedicated concert per year, as well as possible UIL and festival competitions. The musicians will also take part in districtwide performing and visual arts events, like the annual Springfest.
“Offering a mariachi program here in Spring ISD is such an exciting opportunity for our students to showcase not only their talent but also their heritage,” Superintendent Dr. Lupita HInojosa said. “Mariachi is a central part of many celebrations, and has been a part of the regional Mexican music scene for centuries. Getting to connect that history and legacy with our students here in Spring ISD is thrilling.”
The mariachi program will be available as an extracurricular opportunity and is open to students 5th grade and above. If interested, please contact the Performing and Visual Arts department at 281-891-6125.
