Spring ISD Cancels Classes for Monday, Jan. 26 Due to Winter Storm Threat
With freezing rain and dangerously icy conditions continuing across Southeast Texas, Spring Independent School District (Spring ISD) has announced the closure of all schools and district offices for Monday, January 26, 2026. The decision comes as the area grapples with a powerful winter storm that has already impacted travel and safety throughout the region.
The district emphasized that the safety of students, staff, and families remains the top priority. “We are making this decision based on the potential for freezing rain and icy conditions in our area,” Spring ISD officials stated. “We are especially concerned about driving conditions that could impact the ability of our students and staff to safely get to school in the morning.”
In addition to Monday’s closure, all Spring ISD events and extracurricular activities—including sports games, performances, and club meetings—scheduled for Saturday, January 24 and Sunday, January 25 have also been canceled.
What the Weather Experts Are Saying
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Houston/Galveston office, the region is experiencing a prolonged period of extreme cold temperatures, with wind chills as low as 0°F to 15°F and the risk of hard freezes through Tuesday morning.
The latest reports from NWS show the entire Southeast Texas region under an Extreme Cold Warning, urging residents to take urgent precautions to protect people, pets, pipes, and plants.

The weather briefing also warns of hazardous road conditions, especially on bridges and elevated roadways, which are likely to remain icy through Monday morning.
Significant ice accumulation is expected in areas north of Houston, creating potentially impassable travel routes and elevating the risk of power outages due to ice-laden tree limbs and power lines.
Local Impact and Community Response
Spring ISD’s announcement is one of many across the Greater Houston Area as schools, businesses, and agencies prepare for continued weather disruptions. According to the NWS, many inland areas are expected to remain below freezing for more than 24 consecutive hours, with icy spots slow to melt even into Tuesday.
The district urged families to monitor Spring ISD's official website at springisd.org and its social media platforms for updates regarding Tuesday’s schedule. At this time, no decisions have been made for Tuesday, January 27, but officials assure they are keeping a close eye on the forecast.
