Common Bond Bakery & Café Coming to Spring This Summer, Filling Former Panera Bread Location on Kuykendahl Road

May 28 2026

Less than a year after the closure of one of Spring's longtime Panera Bread cafés, a popular Houston-born bakery and café concept is preparing to breathe new life into the vacant space.

Common Bond Bakery & Café is expected to open this summer in the former Panera Bread building at 21620 Kuykendahl Rd, Spring, TX 77389 near Northcrest Drive, located in the shopping center shared with Academy Sports + Outdoors and Hobby Lobby. For many area residents, the announcement marks the return of a neighborhood gathering place that has sat empty since the highly publicized closure of multiple Panera Bread locations across the Houston region in 2025.

The new location brings one of Houston's most recognized bakery and café brands to the heart of Spring, offering everything from handcrafted pastries and artisan breads to coffee beverages, breakfast favorites, sandwiches, salads, desserts, and custom cakes.

A New Beginning for a Familiar Space

For residents of Klein, Northampton, Memorial Northwest, Bridgestone, Gleannloch Farms, Imperial Oaks, and surrounding communities, the former Panera location was more than just a restaurant. It served as a meeting spot for morning coffee, lunch breaks, study sessions, remote work, and casual conversations among neighbors.

That changed in August 2025 when three Spring-area Panera Bread cafés permanently closed following the bankruptcy filing of franchise operator EYM Café of Texas LLC.

As previously reported by My Neighborhood News, the Kuykendahl Road café at 21620 Kuykendahl Rd. was among 15 Houston-area locations shuttered after Panera LLC terminated its franchise agreement with EYM Café of Texas and legal disputes followed. The closures left many residents wondering what would eventually occupy the highly visible corner location.

Now, Common Bond is poised to answer that question.

From Montrose Favorite to Houston Success Story

Common Bond's first Bistro & Bakery opened in Houston's Montrose neighborhood in May 2014. Over the past decade, the brand has grown into a regional favorite with locations in Montrose, The Heights, Tanglewood, the Texas Medical Center, and nearby CityPlace in Spring.

The company describes its mission as creating places where communities can gather and connect over exceptional food, handcrafted pastries, coffee, and desserts.

Its expansion into the former Panera space reflects both the continued growth of the Common Bond brand and the strong demand for community-focused dining destinations in Spring.

What Makes Common Bond Different?

At the center of Common Bond's reputation is a commitment to premium ingredients and traditional baking techniques.

The bakery carefully selects ingredients based on flavor, consistency, and performance, with many sourced from renowned producers around the world.

Guests will find croissants and laminated pastries made with Échiré Butter from France, known for creating the delicate layers and signature flake associated with classic French pastry. Cakes, cookies, brownies, muffins, scones, and breads feature King Arthur Flour and Deluxe Organic Vanilla sourced from Uganda.

Chocolate lovers may recognize the rich flavor profile of República del Cacao Chocolate, sourced from Latin America and incorporated into cookies, brownies, mousse, ganache, pastries, cakes, and specialty beverages.

Fruit-filled pastries and seasonal desserts often feature Bonne Maman jams from France, while Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Co. products add fresh citrus flavor to select beverages and recipes.

According to Common Bond, each ingredient is selected intentionally to support the flavor, texture, and quality that guests expect from the bakery's menu.

More Than Just Coffee and Pastries

While Common Bond is widely known for its croissants, macarons, artisan breads, and desserts, the café offers a full bistro-style dining experience throughout the day.

Menu offerings typically include breakfast plates, brunch favorites, sandwiches, soups, salads, specialty coffee drinks, fresh juices, seasonal beverages, baked goods, celebration cakes, and a rotating selection of pastries and desserts.

The combination of bakery, coffee shop, and neighborhood restaurant has helped the brand develop a loyal following throughout Greater Houston.

What This Means for Spring Residents

The arrival of Common Bond represents more than a new restaurant opening. It signals renewed investment in a commercial corridor that serves thousands of residents each day and restores an active dining destination to one of Spring's busiest retail centers.

For nearby homeowners and families, it creates another local option for weekend brunches, business meetings, coffee dates, study sessions, and special celebrations without having to travel into central Houston.

The opening also reflects a broader trend of established Houston brands expanding into fast-growing suburban communities as population growth continues across North Harris County and southern Montgomery County.

What Happens Next

While an official grand opening date has not yet been announced, Common Bond is expected to open its Spring location this summer.

As work progresses on the transformation of the former Panera Bread building, residents can look forward to welcoming a Houston-grown business that has built its reputation on quality ingredients, handcrafted baked goods, and creating spaces where communities gather.

For many residents who watched the former café sit vacant after the 2025 closures, the arrival of Common Bond may feel like the beginning of a new chapter for a corner that has long served as a neighborhood meeting place.
