San Antonio Spurs Make History: Keldon Johnson Wins Sixth Man of the Year, Victor Wembanyama Named Defensive Player of the Year

For San Antonio Spurs fans, the 2025–26 NBA season is becoming about more than just a return to the playoffs—it’s about a renewed sense of pride, identity, and belief in the team’s future.

With a 62-20 record and their first postseason appearance since 2019, the Spurs have not only re-entered the national spotlight but are now bringing major league honors back to the Alamo City. This week, the NBA announced two standout achievements: Keldon Johnson has been named the 2025-26 Kia NBA Sixth Man of the Year, while Victor Wembanyama earned the 2025-26 Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year award.

Together, these honors reflect a team that is not just winning games—but redefining what Spurs basketball looks like for a new generation of fans across San Antonio.

Keldon Johnson’s Historic Sixth Man Season Elevates Spurs Depth

Keldon Johnson’s recognition as Sixth Man of the Year marks a significant milestone for the franchise. He becomes just the second player in Spurs history to earn the honor, joining Hall of Famer Manu Ginóbili, who won the award in the 2007–08 season.

For longtime fans, the comparison carries weight. Like Ginóbili, Johnson has become the engine of the Spurs’ bench—bringing energy, consistency, and production every night.

During the 2025–26 NBA season, Johnson averaged 13.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 23.3 minutes per game, appearing in all 82 games without a single start—making him the only player in the league to do so. His durability and consistency played a critical role in maintaining the Spurs’ momentum throughout the season.

His impact goes beyond averages. Johnson:

  • Led all NBA reserves in Win Shares (6.4)
  • Scored 1,081 total bench points, setting a new Spurs single-season record
  • Recorded 58 double-digit scoring games off the bench
  • Ranked second in the NBA in total bench points, field goals made, and rebounds

He also became the only player in the NBA this season to record over 1,000 points and 400 rebounds off the bench while shooting above 50% from the field.

For San Antonio residents, Johnson’s performance represents something deeper—a reminder of the team-first culture that has long defined Spurs basketball.

Victor Wembanyama’s Defensive Dominance Sets NBA Standard

While Johnson anchored the bench, Victor Wembanyama solidified himself as one of the most dominant defensive forces the NBA has ever seen.

In just his third season, Wembanyama was named the 2025-26 Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the youngest player in league history to win the award at just 22 years and 106 days old—and the first unanimous selection ever.

He joins Spurs legends Alvin Robertson, David Robinson, and Kawhi Leonard as the only players in franchise history to receive the honor, placing him firmly within one of the NBA’s most respected defensive legacies.

Wembanyama’s season was defined by historic production:

  • Averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.08 blocks per game
  • Led the NBA in total blocks (197) and blocks per game
  • Ranked first in opponent field goal percentage (40.7%)
  • Led the league in contested shots per game (9.3)
  • Recorded 50 multi-block games, including 17 games with 5+ blocks

He was also the only player in the league to reach at least 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 150 blocks, and 50 steals this season.

Since entering the NBA in 2023, Wembanyama has accumulated 627 blocks—more than any other player in that span—and is now one of only three players in NBA history to lead the league in blocks per game for three consecutive seasons.

For San Antonio families and longtime Spurs supporters, his presence signals something rare: a generational player who is already shaping the team’s identity on both ends of the court.

What This Means for San Antonio Spurs Fans and the Community

This dual recognition is about more than individual awards—it reflects a larger shift happening in San Antonio.

The Spurs’ return to elite status brings renewed excitement to local neighborhoods, boosts downtown energy on game nights, and reinforces the city’s reputation as one of the most passionate basketball communities in the country.

For younger fans, players like Johnson and Wembanyama are becoming role models. For longtime residents, the success echoes the championship-era culture built on teamwork, defense, and unselfish play.

With a deep roster, a dominant defensive anchor, and one of the league’s most productive bench leaders, the Spurs are not just back—they’re building something sustainable.

What Happens Next for the Spurs

As the NBA playoffs continue, San Antonio enters with momentum, depth, and national attention. The combination of Wembanyama’s defensive dominance and Johnson’s bench leadership gives the Spurs a competitive edge few teams can match.

For a city that has waited several seasons to return to this stage, the timing couldn’t feel more meaningful.

The question now isn’t just how far the Spurs can go this year—but how long this new era of success can last.
