Rudolph Returns to San Antonio as ICE! Holiday Experience Comes Back to JW Marriott Hill Country Resort
San Antonio families will have another reason to reach for their winter coats this holiday season — even if the forecast outside remains comfortably Texas.
ICE!, the immersive Christmas attraction built from more than 2 million pounds of hand-carved ice, will return to the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort with scenes inspired by “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” The limited-time San Antonio holiday experience is scheduled to run from Nov. 23, 2026, through Jan. 3, 2027.
For local parents, grandparents and visiting relatives, the attraction offers a familiar holiday story presented on an unusually large and chilly scale. Guests will walk through floor-to-ceiling ice displays featuring Rudolph and his friends, explore frozen passageways, pose for family photos and ride down two-story ice slides inside an environment kept at 9 degrees Fahrenheit.
Signature blue parkas are provided to help visitors manage the indoor cold, though families may still want to arrive with warm clothing, gloves and closed-toe shoes.
A San Antonio Christmas Tradition Returns
The Rudolph-themed attraction is part of Marriott International’s largest ICE! lineup to date, expanding the holiday experience to eight destination resorts across the United States.
While new themes such as “Harry Potter,” “Home Alone” and Disney Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” will debut at other resorts, the San Antonio location will bring back the story of Rudolph, the young reindeer whose glowing red nose helps guide Santa’s sleigh through difficult weather.
The television special has become a multigenerational holiday tradition since its original broadcast in 1964. Its story of belonging, friendship and finding value in the traits that make someone different has remained meaningful for families for decades.
At the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort, that story will unfold across more than 10 immersive scenes carved entirely from ice.
How the ICE! Experience Is Created
ICE! was created by Gaylord Hotels in 2001 and first appeared at Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville. Since then, tens of millions of guests have visited versions of the frozen holiday attraction at resorts across the country.
The displays are inspired by the Harbin Ice Festival in China, an internationally known winter celebration recognized for elaborate ice architecture and large-scale frozen sculptures.
More than 300 artisans from Harbin spend approximately 40 days creating the ICE! attractions. Using techniques passed down through generations, the artists carve roughly 60,000 ice blocks into characters, tunnels, slides and detailed storybook scenes.
The scale of the work is part of what sets the experience apart from a traditional holiday light display or seasonal photo opportunity. Visitors are not simply looking at individual sculptures; they are walking through a frozen version of a familiar Christmas story.

More Holiday Activities at the San Antonio Resort
ICE! will serve as the marquee attraction, but it will not be the only Christmas activity planned at participating resorts.
Marriott’s broader “So Much Christmas” celebration typically transforms resort properties with millions of lights, towering Christmas trees and elaborate seasonal décor. Depending on the location, activities may include character dining, scavenger hunts, live performances, Christmas villages, Santa photos and other family experiences.
Specific attractions, schedules and ticket requirements can vary by resort, so San Antonio visitors should review the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort’s event details before planning a trip.
The resort setting may also make the experience useful for families hosting out-of-town guests or looking for a holiday staycation without leaving the San Antonio area. Day visitors can purchase attraction tickets, while overnight packages may combine accommodations with access to select Christmas activities.

What San Antonio Families Should Know Before Visiting
The San Antonio ICE! attraction will run from Nov. 23, 2026, through Jan. 3, 2027, placing it across Thanksgiving week, the Christmas season, winter break and the first weekend of the new year.
Because the attraction is maintained at 9 degrees, visitors should plan for a dramatic temperature change after entering from the South Texas outdoors. The provided parkas offer an added layer, but young children and guests who are especially sensitive to cold may benefit from bringing hats and gloves.
Families should also consider purchasing tickets in advance, particularly for weekends, school holidays and the days closest to Christmas. Prices, operating hours and availability may change by date.
For San Antonio residents, ICE! offers something rarely experienced close to home: a walk-through winter world created by hundreds of artists, centered on a story many families already share from one generation to the next.
