October is bringing plenty of reasons for Katy families to pull out the costumes, gather the kids and spend some time together outdoors.

Willowfork Drainage District's Central Green Park in LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch will host three community events during the month, beginning with the 13th Annual Monster Mash Costume Contest on Oct. 3, followed by a Día de los Muertos celebration on Oct. 30 and a family-friendly Tent and Treat on Halloween.

For families searching for Halloween events in Katy, fall festivals near Cinco Ranch or free October activities in West Houston, the lineup offers a mix of spooky fun, cultural tradition and community gathering.

Monster Mash Returns Oct. 3 With Costumes, Dancing and Live Music

The month begins Saturday, Oct. 3, with Central Green Park's 13th Annual Monster Mash, scheduled from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

Costumes will be a big part of the evening, with contestants competing in four categories: Scariest, Funniest, Best Group and Most Creative. Registration and pre-judging will take place from 6 to 7 p.m., and participants should report to the tent corresponding with their chosen category.

Only one category entry is allowed per contestant or group, and winners must be present to claim their prizes.

The larger Monster Mash celebration gets underway at 6:30 p.m., followed by a live witches performance at 6:35 p.m. DJ Kalki will lead a dance party from 7 to 8 p.m., with live music continuing from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Costume contest finals and winner announcements are also planned during the final portion of the evening.

Nithya Hari will serve as emcee.

For families with children who have been planning their costumes for weeks, the evening offers an early chance to put those creations to work before Halloween night.

Día de los Muertos Celebration Comes to Central Green Oct. 30

The tone shifts from Halloween fun to cultural celebration on Friday, Oct. 30, when Central Green partners with LaCenterra's Viva la Vida Celebration for a Día de los Muertos Celebration from 5 to 7 p.m.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a tradition centered on remembering and honoring loved ones who have died. The Central Green gathering will bring families and friends together for an evening focused on culture, remembrance, community and live entertainment.

Admission is free.

For local residents looking for Día de los Muertos events in Katy, the celebration offers a local opportunity to experience traditions associated with the holiday in a public community setting.

Halloween Day Brings Tent and Treat to Central Green

Families looking for a daytime trick-or-treat option can return to Central Green on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Inframark will host Tent and Treat from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of its Water Wise event, providing another safe trick-or-treat opportunity for local children.

The daytime schedule may be especially convenient for families with younger children or those who want to enjoy a community Halloween activity before neighborhood trick-or-treating begins later that evening.

A Community Gathering Place in the Heart of Cinco Ranch

Central Green is a half-acre public park developed, owned and operated by Willow Fork Drainage District and located within LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd. The park opened in 2013 and was designed as a gathering place for community events, entertainment and other public programming.

Its lawn, performance stage and location among LaCenterra's restaurants and shops have made it a familiar meeting place for concerts, movie nights, festivals and seasonal events. Free parking is available in nearby LaCenterra garages and along surrounding streets. 

That setting makes October's schedule particularly easy for families looking to make an evening of it, whether that means watching a costume contest, learning more about Día de los Muertos traditions or simply letting children enjoy a little Halloween fun close to home.

With three celebrations spread across the month, Katy families do not have to wait until Halloween night to get into the spirit of the season.
