BEARing Gifts 2026: Houston Nonprofit Seeks Holiday Toy Donations, Child Sponsors and Volunteers to Help Thousands of Children in CPS Care
For thousands of children across Greater Houston, Christmas morning can look very different from the holiday celebrations many families take for granted. Some are living in foster care, others are navigating difficult circumstances at home, and many are facing a season filled with uncertainty. A Houston nonprofit is working to make sure those challenges do not mean going without a gift of their own.
BEAR, which stands for Be A Resource for CPS Kids, is preparing for its annual BEARing Gifts 2026 holiday program, inviting Houston-area residents to sponsor children, donate new toys, organize holiday toy drives and volunteer. The program serves at-risk children and those involved with Child Protective Services (CPS) throughout Greater Houston.
The need is significant. During the 2025 holiday season, BEARing Gifts provided presents to 32,334 children, with support from local donors, volunteers, businesses and community organizations. As the 2026 holiday season approaches, the nonprofit is once again asking neighbors to help bring a little happiness and a sense of normalcy to children experiencing difficult circumstances.
What Is BEAR, and How Does the Houston Nonprofit Help Children in CPS Care?
BEAR is a Houston-based nonprofit dedicated to meeting the needs of children involved with Child Protective Services, including children experiencing abuse, neglect and other challenging family circumstances.
The organization was built around a practical mission: helping provide the things children need when their families or caregivers may not have the resources to obtain them.
Its foundational program, BEAR Necessities, supplies everyday essentials to children under CPS supervision. According to the organization, the program serves approximately 45,000 children annually, making it BEAR's largest year-round initiative.
Over time, BEAR's work has grown to include several programs addressing different needs throughout a child's experience with the child welfare system.
BEAR Back to School helps children prepare for the classroom, while the Heart Gallery of Greater Houston raises awareness about children awaiting adoption. The Greater Houston Permanency Collaborative is another part of the organization's efforts to support children and families involved in the child welfare system.
BEARing Gifts brings that same commitment into the holiday season, with a focus on giving children something personal to look forward to.
Unlike a general holiday donation campaign, BEARing Gifts offers opportunities to sponsor individual children using their own holiday wish lists. The program also collects new toys and gifts that BEAR organizes for distribution to children across the region.
For Greater Houston families looking for a meaningful Christmas charity, the program offers several ways to participate, whether they have time to volunteer, money to contribute or a single new toy to give.
Five Ways Houston Residents Can Support BEARing Gifts in 2026
BEAR has identified five ways for individuals, families, neighborhoods, schools and businesses to participate in this year's holiday program.
1. Sponsor a Child Beginning November 2
One of the most personal ways to participate is by sponsoring a child through BEARing Gifts.
Child sponsorship registration is scheduled to reopen November 2, 2026. Once the program becomes available, participants can submit a sponsorship request through BEAR's online form.
Sponsors are then matched with a child or children and receive an email containing information about their matches, including individual holiday wish lists.
Sponsors are asked to provide at least one item from the child's wish list or another age-appropriate gift. Additional gifts are welcome but not required.
All gifts for sponsored children must be delivered to BEAR headquarters or a participating donation location by Monday, December 14, 2026.
For parents hoping to teach their own children about generosity, choosing a gift for another child can also become a meaningful family holiday tradition.
2. Host a Holiday Toy Drive With Neighbors, Coworkers or Friends
Local businesses, neighborhood associations, churches, schools and community groups can make a difference by organizing a BEARing Gifts toy drive.
A neighborhood collection, office donation drive or gathering among friends can turn individual contributions into a larger collection of gifts for Houston-area children.
BEAR asks organizers to register their 2026 toy drives through its website and deliver donations to the BEAR headquarters and warehouse by Tuesday, December 15, 2026.
All donated toys and gifts must be brand-new and unwrapped. Bicycles are preferably donated unassembled, although assembled bicycles are also accepted.
The organization encourages earlier drop-offs whenever possible, allowing additional time to sort donations and fulfill children's holiday wishes before Christmas.
BEAR also provides holiday gift suggestions organized by age group to help donors select appropriate items.
3. Shop the BEARing Gifts Amazon Wish List
Residents who cannot visit a donation location can still participate from home.
BEAR maintains an Amazon Wish List featuring items needed for its holiday program. Purchases are shipped directly to the organization's headquarters, where staff and volunteers organize the gifts for distribution.
Donors are encouraged to include their names and mailing addresses so BEAR can acknowledge their contributions.
This option may be particularly convenient for busy families, people living outside Houston who want to support children in the area, or residents who prefer to donate without making an additional holiday shopping trip.
4. Make a Monetary Donation
Financial contributions give BEAR the flexibility to purchase gifts and help meet needs that may not be covered by donated items.
Residents can donate through the organization's website and select BEARing Gifts as their preferred program.
BEAR notes that if the holiday campaign raises more money than is needed for the year's program, remaining funds will support BEAR Necessities, its year-round program providing essential resources to children under CPS supervision.
Anyone donating physical items is asked to complete BEAR's In-Kind Gift Form so the organization can properly acknowledge the contribution.
5. Volunteer With BEARing Gifts
For residents who would rather give their time, BEAR offers both on-site and off-site volunteer opportunities.
Individuals, families, groups of friends and corporate teams can create accounts through the organization's volunteer portal and browse available shifts.
Some opportunities take place at BEAR headquarters, while others are hosted by partner agencies. Volunteer openings are limited, so participants are encouraged to check multiple dates if their preferred shift is full.
Volunteers should also review the location listed for each opportunity before registering.
Questions about volunteer opportunities can be directed to BEAR Volunteer Manager Alexis Evans through the organization.

Local Businesses and Community Partners Help Make BEARing Gifts Possible
BEARing Gifts depends on more than individual donations. Businesses and community organizations across the Houston area also contribute by collecting toys, providing resources, sponsoring the program and encouraging employees to volunteer.
The organization's 2025 holiday supporters included Tide Cleaners, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, Harris County Precinct 2 Community Centers, American Furniture Warehouse, Experimax West Houston, KPRC 2 and Nava Law Group.
BEAR's 2026 program page also recognizes its Holiday Heroes, including participating corporate and community partners helping support this year's campaign.
These partnerships demonstrate how a holiday giving program can extend beyond a single organization. A local business can organize a collection, a neighborhood can bring families together for a toy drive, and employees can volunteer as a team.
For residents throughout Houston, Katy, Cypress, Spring, Tomball, The Woodlands, Sugar Land and surrounding communities, participating does not require organizing a major fundraiser. A small collection among neighbors or coworkers can help provide gifts that BEAR distributes through its established program.
Why Holiday Giving Matters for Children in Foster Care and CPS-Involved Families
For children navigating the child welfare system, the holidays may come during a period of separation, uncertainty or major changes in their living arrangements.
A Christmas gift cannot resolve those challenges. But receiving something chosen especially for them can provide a moment of happiness during a difficult time.
That personal connection is part of what makes BEARing Gifts different. Through the child sponsorship program, donors can select presents based on an individual child's wishes rather than simply contributing to a general collection.
The program also offers Houston-area families an opportunity to talk with their own children about compassion and the needs of others in their community.
And because BEAR operates throughout the year, the nonprofit's work continues after the decorations come down. Its BEAR Necessities, BEAR Back to School and other initiatives address needs that extend well beyond the holiday season.

With child sponsorships reopening November 2 and holiday donation deadlines approaching in December, now is a good time for Greater Houston residents to decide how they would like to help.
Last Christmas, more than 32,000 children received gifts through BEARing Gifts. Behind that number were thousands of individual children, each with their own circumstances, interests and holiday wishes. This year, Houston-area neighbors have another opportunity to help make those wishes come true.
