Nuncrackers Brings Christmas Comedy, Music and Holiday Mischief to Stageworks Theatre in Northwest Houston This December
Christmas concerts, holiday lights and seasonal traditions are returning to the Houston area, but one Northwest Houston theater has something a little different planned for December. At Stageworks Theatre, a group of singing nuns will attempt to produce their very own Christmas television special, and just about everything that can go wrong probably will.
Nuncrackers, the holiday musical from Nunsense creator Dan Goggin, is coming to Stageworks Theatre for 10 performances from December 4 through December 20, 2026, giving families in Cypress, Cy-Fair, Jersey Village and surrounding Northwest Houston communities another way to celebrate the Christmas season close to home.
With familiar Christmas carols, original musical numbers, unexpected mishaps and plenty of comedy, the production offers an alternative to traditional holiday performances. It's also an opportunity to support local theater and enjoy an evening out without making the trip into downtown Houston's Theater District.
A Christmas Television Special That Goes Hilariously Off Script
The Little Sisters of Hoboken have big plans for Christmas. Reverend Mother has transformed the convent basement into a cable access television studio, where the sisters are preparing to record their first holiday special.
Naturally, things don't go exactly as rehearsed.
As the nuns attempt to put together their Christmas broadcast, unexpected problems, last-minute substitutions and a series of comedic surprises threaten to turn their carefully planned celebration upside down.
The production features the familiar characters from the Nunsense musicals, along with Father Virgil and four talented students from Mount Saint Helen's. Together, they navigate the challenges of producing a television Christmas special while delivering a mix of musical performances, comedy and holiday cheer.
Audiences can expect original songs including "Twelve Days Prior to Christmas," "Santa Ain't Comin' to Our House," "We Three Kings of Orient Are Us" and "It's Better to Give than to Receive."
Traditional Christmas carols are also woven into the production, along with a Secret Santa segment that invites audience participation.
Although Nuncrackers playfully pokes fun at religious customs and traditions, its humor is lighthearted rather than mean-spirited. The show features clean language and is recommended for ages 10 and older, making it an option for families with older children, grandparents and anyone who enjoys a musical comedy with a Christmas theme.
Stageworks Theatre Continues Bringing Live Performances to Northwest Houston
For residents who enjoy live theater but prefer to stay closer to home, Stageworks Theatre has long been part of the local performing arts scene.
Located along Grant Road in Northwest Houston, Stageworks Theatre is a community-based performing arts organization that presents theatrical productions and provides opportunities for local performers and audiences to experience live entertainment.
Known for its history as Houston Family Arts Center, the organization has helped make theater accessible to residents throughout the Cypress and Northwest Houston area. Its programming has included musicals, comedies and dramatic productions, offering a range of experiences for theatergoers with different interests.
Unlike a touring Broadway production, community theater also creates opportunities for people with connections to the surrounding area to participate in the performing arts. From performers and production crews to volunteers and audience members, local theater brings together people who might otherwise never cross paths.
For families considering things to do in Cypress and Northwest Houston during the 2026 Christmas season, Nuncrackersoffers an opportunity to make a night at the theater part of their holiday plans.
The Story Behind Nuncrackers and Creator Dan Goggin
Nuncrackers is the fourth musical in Dan Goggin's popular Nunsense series, which began with the original Nunsenseproduction and grew into a collection of musical comedies featuring the Little Sisters of Hoboken.
The Christmas-themed installment premiered in October 1998 at Chanhassen Dinner Theatre in the Minneapolis area, introducing audiences to the sisters' unconventional attempt at producing a holiday television special.
Goggin, a native of Alma, Michigan, originally trained as a classical countertenor and began his professional career on Broadway before becoming a writer, composer and director.
His original Nunsense musical received three Outer Critics' Circle Awards in 1986 for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Music. Its popularity led to numerous sequels, national tours and television productions featuring performers such as Rue McClanahan, Vicki Lawrence and Sally Struthers.
Beyond the Nunsense series, Goggin's work includes Balancing Act and The Traditional Latin Mass. The television version of Nuncrackers also received an Emmy nomination for Best Musical Score.
Nearly three decades after its premiere, Nuncrackers continues to find its way onto theater schedules during the Christmas season, combining the familiar appeal of holiday music with the offbeat personalities that made the original Nunsensesuccessful.

A Local Holiday Tradition Worth Adding to the Calendar
With school concerts, neighborhood gatherings and Christmas celebrations filling December calendars, families across Northwest Houston have plenty of ways to spend time together during the holidays.
A live performance offers something different. There are no screens to scroll through, no commercials to skip and no way to predict exactly how an audience will respond when something funny happens onstage. For children experiencing live theater for the first time, that can be part of the fun.
For Stageworks Theatre, productions like Nuncrackers are also part of a larger commitment to keeping the performing arts available within the community. The nonprofit organization relies on ticket sales, donations and volunteers to support its productions and educational programs, including opportunities for young performers to develop their skills.
As the Little Sisters of Hoboken prepare to turn their convent basement into a Christmas television studio, Northwest Houston audiences can look forward to an evening of music, laughter and a few holiday surprises.
