HAR.com Reveals Houston's Hottest Housing Markets of 2026: Huffman, Needville and Sugar Land Lead as Home Sales Surge Across Greater Houston
For anyone considering buying a home in the Greater Houston area, some of the region's busiest housing markets may not be where they would expect. From the growing communities of Huffman and Needville to established neighborhoods in Sugar Land and west Houston, homebuyers are making moves in areas offering a mix of affordability, new construction and established community amenities.
The latest report from the Houston Association of Realtors (HAR) identifies the 10 hottest communities in the Houston area for the third quarter of 2026, based on year-over-year growth in home sales transactions. Leading the list is the Huffman Area, where sales increased an impressive 166.7%, followed by Needville Area and Sugar Land East.
The findings offer a closer look at where buyers are purchasing homes across Houston, Harris County, Fort Bend County and surrounding communities, as well as how new home construction and home prices are influencing the local real estate market.
Huffman Area Takes the Top Spot With 166.7% Growth in Home Sales
The Huffman Area, located in northeast Harris County near Lake Houston, recorded the largest year-over-year increase in home sales among the communities included in HAR's third-quarter report.
Home sales climbed from 63 transactions during the third quarter of 2025 to 168 during the same period in 2026, representing a 166.7% increase. Huffman returned to the number one position after ranking second in the previous quarter.
With an average sales price of $276,515, Huffman also offered one of the lower average home prices among the top 10 communities.
For buyers looking beyond Houston's more densely developed neighborhoods, the Huffman area offers a different setting, with a mix of established homes, newer residential developments and access to outdoor recreation around Lake Houston. Its location also provides connections to employment centers and surrounding communities in northeast Harris County.
New construction played a significant role in the area's sales activity, accounting for 62.5% of Huffman's transactions during the quarter. That means nearly two out of every three homes sold were newly built.
Needville, Sugar Land East, Waller and Humble Round Out the Top Five
The Needville Area in Fort Bend County claimed the second position, recording an 80.6% year-over-year increase in home sales and an average sales price of $335,494.
Needville's performance was particularly notable for the role of new construction. According to HAR, newly built homes accounted for 81.5% of all transactions in the area, indicating that new residential development contributed heavily to its sales growth.
For buyers interested in communities outside Houston's urban core, Needville offers a more rural setting while remaining connected to the expanding Fort Bend County housing market.
Sugar Land East ranked third with a 52.9% increase in home sales and an average sales price of $489,310, the highest among the 10 communities on the list.
Unlike some of the more rural markets in the rankings, Sugar Land East is part of an established suburban area known for its residential neighborhoods, schools, parks, shopping and proximity to major employment corridors. Its strong transaction growth shows that increased sales activity is not limited to communities with lower home prices or large amounts of new construction.
Waller, northwest of Houston, placed fourth with a 45.7% increase in transactions and an average sales price of $338,081. New construction represented 87.6% of its home sales, the highest reported share among the communities highlighted by HAR.
Humble Area East completed the top five with a 36.7% increase in home sales and an average price of $261,713, the lowest average sales price among the top 10 communities.
Together, these markets illustrate how homebuyers are purchasing properties across different parts of the Houston region, from established suburbs to communities experiencing significant residential construction.

The remaining communities in the rankings also represent a wide geographic range.

Houston Home Prices: Seven of the 10 Hottest Communities Are Below the Regional Average
One of the more interesting findings in HAR's report is the difference in home prices among the communities experiencing the strongest sales growth.
The Houston-area average sales price was $421,311, while seven of the top 10 communities reported average prices below that figure.
Humble Area East had the lowest average sales price at $261,713, followed by Huffman Area at $276,515 and Bear Creek South at $286,321.
At the other end of the rankings, Sugar Land East averaged $489,310, Chambers County West averaged $457,704 and East End averaged $436,015.
These differences matter for prospective homebuyers comparing neighborhoods, especially those weighing home prices against commute times, schools, lot sizes, neighborhood amenities and proximity to family or work.
An area's average sales price, however, does not necessarily represent the price of every home available there. Individual properties can vary considerably depending on size, age, location, condition and other factors.
“Buyers are looking for value, and these communities are showing that there are still opportunities to find it,” said HAR Chair Theresa Hill with Compass RE Texas, LLC - Houston. “New construction is helping meet that demand by offering more choices at different price points. It's encouraging to see that kind of activity across so many parts of the Houston area.”
New Construction Is Driving Home Sales in Several Houston-Area Communities
Newly built homes are a major part of the story behind the latest rankings.
In Waller, nearly nine out of every 10 homes sold during the quarter were new construction. Needville Area and Huffman Area also recorded substantial shares of newly built homes.
Source: HAR, Q3 2026. Percentages reflect the share of transactions involving newly built homes. For buyers, additional new construction can mean more options when comparing floor plans, energy-efficiency features, neighborhood amenities and home prices. Some may prefer a newly built home, while others may find that established neighborhoods offer the location, landscaping or community character they want.
For existing homeowners, increased construction and sales activity can also raise questions about traffic, infrastructure, school enrollment and how nearby development may affect their neighborhoods over time.
Those are considerations worth watching as residential growth continues across the Houston metropolitan area.
How Long Are Homes Taking to Sell in Houston's Hottest Communities?
While the transaction growth figures capture attention, HAR's report also provides another useful measure of local housing activity: average days on market.
Among the top 10 communities, Sugar Land East recorded the shortest average marketing period at 31 days, followed by Bear Creek South at 40 days and Humble Area East at 42 days.
Needville Area averaged 56 days, Midtown - Galveston averaged 62 days, Angleton averaged 64 days and Huffman Area averaged 65 days.
East End recorded an average of 77 days, while Waller averaged 84 days.
One figure stood out: Chambers County West showed an average of 688 days on market, substantially longer than the other communities in the rankings. The HAR chart does not explain the unusually high figure, so it should not be interpreted as typical for every home in that area.
These differences also show why strong year-over-year sales growth does not necessarily mean homes are selling quickly. A community can experience a significant increase in transactions while properties still spend weeks or months on the market.
What Do Houston's Hottest Housing Markets Mean for Buyers and Homeowners?
For people planning to buy a home in the Greater Houston area, the third-quarter rankings offer a useful starting point for researching neighborhoods that may not have been on their radar.
Huffman, Needville and Waller are attracting substantial new-construction activity, while established areas such as Sugar Land East and Bear Creek South are also seeing increased transactions.
For homeowners, the findings provide a snapshot of how their communities fit into the broader regional housing market. Increased sales can indicate greater buyer activity, but it does not automatically translate into rising property values or higher selling prices.
It is also important to distinguish between the two. HAR's hottest communities rankings measure growth in the number of homes sold, not increases in home prices or appreciation rates. A community's position on the list does not necessarily mean its homes are gaining value faster than those elsewhere.
Buyers and sellers considering a move should look beyond the rankings to examine recent comparable sales, current listings, local inventory, property taxes, insurance costs and neighborhood-specific market conditions.
What's Next for the Greater Houston Housing Market?
As 2026 moves into its final quarter, the next set of housing market reports will help show whether the strong transaction growth in communities such as Huffman, Needville and Sugar Land East continues.
New residential construction will remain an important factor to watch, particularly in areas where newly built homes account for most of the sales activity.
For families deciding where to put down roots, longtime homeowners watching changes in their neighborhoods and local businesses serving growing communities, the latest HAR rankings offer another perspective on how Greater Houston is changing.
The numbers tell a story of homebuyers making different choices across the region, whether that means purchasing a new home in Waller, finding a property in an established Sugar Land neighborhood or exploring more affordable options around Huffman and Humble.
