New H-E-B Near Converse Takes Shape Along I-10 as Late 2026 Opening Comes Into Focus
Residents traveling through the fast-growing area near Converse can now see more of what is taking shape at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Loop 1604 East.
The new H-E-B is not a newly announced project. Construction has been underway for some time, but recently released details from the San Antonio-based grocery company offer a clearer picture of how the store will serve families, commuters and surrounding neighborhoods when it opens in late 2026.
Planned for 10137 IH 10 East in Bexar County, the approximately 125,000-square-foot store will include a True Texas BBQ restaurant with indoor seating, a pharmacy with drive-thru service, H-E-B Curbside, Home Delivery and the broad selection of groceries, prepared foods and household products associated with the Texas retailer.
For residents on San Antonio’s eastern edge, the project represents more than another place to pick up groceries. The store is expected to become a major commercial anchor along one of the region’s busiest growth corridors, serving nearby communities while also giving commuters traveling toward Seguin, La Vernia and other communities east of San Antonio another convenient shopping option.
Construction Details and Timeline for New Converse-Area H-E-B
Public records filed with the state in February 2025 provide a closer look at the scale and timeline of the project.
The filing lists the development as “HEB San Antonio 53 - Converse - Store” and confirms the address at 10137 I-10, Schertz, TX 78154 in Bexar County. Plans call for a new store spanning roughly 125,434 square feet, with an estimated construction cost of just over $21 million.
According to the filing, construction was originally slated to begin Sept. 1, 2025, with completion targeted for Nov. 30, 2026. While the completion date can shift as work progresses, it aligns with H-E-B’s current expectation that the store will open in late 2026.
Beyond the grocery store itself, the project is designed as part of a larger commercial development. According to a press release issued by H-E-B on July 9, 2026, additional retail buildings and future pad sites are planned for the property, which could bring more restaurants, shops and services to the growing communities surrounding Converse, East San Antonio and the I-10 corridor.
Store Manager Brings Personal Connection to East Side Community
H-E-B has named Will Tate as general manager of the new store. Tate grew up in the area and has worked for H-E-B for more than 30 years, holding leadership positions at several locations.
“I have some deep roots in this community. I grew up here,” Tate said. “I’m looking forward to working with our Partners to create a store environment that both serves and celebrates the people in this community.”
Tate said the store is positioned to serve several East Side communities, as well as commuters heading home toward Seguin, La Vernia and surrounding areas.
That local connection could matter in a part of Bexar County experiencing continued residential and commercial growth. As new subdivisions and businesses expand east of San Antonio, residents have increasingly looked for grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies and everyday services that can keep pace with the area’s population.

The produce department will carry organic and Texas-grown fruits and vegetables, while the meat market will offer Prime, natural and organic meats, Wagyu selections and fully cooked options. A seafood counter will feature sustainably sourced products.

The True Texas BBQ restaurant is expected to be one of the store’s most visible features, giving customers a place to sit down for barbecue before or after shopping. More Than 400 H-E-B Jobs Planned Near Converse
H-E-B expects the new store to employ more than 400 Partners, the company’s term for employees. Job opportunities tied to the Converse-area H-E-B are expected to include positions in retail operations, food preparation, pharmacy services, curbside fulfillment, management, customer service and specialty departments. Openings are posted through H-E-B Careers as hiring needs are announced.
As the largest privately held employer in Texas, H-E-B employs more than 175,000 people across Texas and Mexico, operating more than 455 stores and reports annual sales exceeding $50 billion.
Founded more than 120 years ago, H-E-B has grown from a small Texas grocery business into one of the nation’s largest privately held retailers. Although its reach now extends across hundreds of communities, the company remains headquartered in San Antonio, making the East Side project part of a continued investment in its home region.
H-E-B Donation Supports Boysville San Antonio
As part of the store update, H-E-B announced a $25,000 gift to Boysville San Antonio, an organization that supports children, teenagers and young adults who have experienced abuse, neglect or family crisis.
The donation reflects H-E-B’s Spirit of Giving philosophy, which focuses on supporting local nonprofits, hunger relief efforts, education, disaster response and community programs beyond the company’s stores.
For families who depend on Boysville’s services, the contribution connects the new commercial development with an organization addressing some of the community’s most difficult and personal challenges.
What the New H-E-B Means for San Antonio’s East Side
The new H-E-B at I-10 and Loop 1604 East is arriving as the eastern side of the San Antonio region continues to add homes, businesses and daily traffic.
A store of this size can change how residents handle routine errands, particularly for families who currently travel farther for groceries, prescriptions, curbside pickup or prepared meals. The pharmacy drive-thru and delivery options may be especially useful for older residents, parents with young children and households balancing work and school schedules.
The additional retail buildings planned around the H-E-B could also attract complementary businesses and create a larger shopping destination near Converse. Specific future tenants have not yet been announced.
For now, construction remains underway, and the late 2026 opening is still ahead. But the new details give East Side residents a better understanding of what is being built, how many jobs it may create and how the development could fit into the continued growth of the I-10 and Loop 1604 corridor.
