Victor Wembanyama Signs Multi-Year Spurs Extension, Securing the Future of Basketball in San Antonio
For San Antonio Spurs fans, the team’s latest move offers something larger than a routine roster update: long-term confidence in the future of basketball in the Alamo City.
The Spurs announced July 10 that Victor Wembanyama has signed a multi-year contract extension, securing the 7-foot-4 franchise cornerstone after a season that carried San Antonio back to the NBA Finals. The organization did not disclose the financial terms or exact length of the agreement, in keeping with team policy.
The extension strengthens the connection between one of basketball’s most recognizable young stars and a city that has embraced him since the Spurs selected him with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. It also signals that Wembanyama will remain central to the team’s effort to build its next sustained championship contender.
A Defining Season for Wembanyama and the Spurs
Wembanyama’s third NBA season marked a major step forward for both the player and the franchise.
He appeared in 64 regular-season games, averaging career highs of 25 points and 11.5 rebounds, along with 3.1 assists, a league-leading 3.08 blocks and 1.03 steals in 29.2 minutes per game. He became only the seventh player in NBA history to average at least 25 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in a season.
His performance helped the Spurs finish 62-20 and reach the postseason for the first time since 2019. San Antonio ultimately advanced to the 2026 NBA Finals before falling to the New York Knicks.
Wembanyama was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the youngest player to win the award and the first unanimous recipient since it was introduced for the 1982-83 season. He was also selected to the All-NBA First Team and All-NBA Defensive First Team.
The 22-year-old earned his second consecutive NBA All-Star selection and was chosen as a starter for the first time. He also became the third player in NBA history to lead the league in blocked shots for three consecutive seasons.
Wembanyama Delivers in His First NBA Playoffs
The Spurs’ return to the postseason gave Wembanyama his first opportunity to compete on the NBA’s biggest stage.
Across 22 playoff games, he averaged 23.8 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, a postseason-best 3.55 blocks and .95 steals while playing 34.1 minutes per game.
His postseason run ended with San Antonio’s first NBA Finals appearance of the Wembanyama era. According to the Spurs, he became only the second player in league history to reach the NBA Finals during both his first playoff appearance and his first season as an All-NBA First Team selection, joining Elgin Baylor.
During the Finals, Wembanyama averaged 26 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game, providing San Antonio fans with an early look at what the franchise hopes will become a lasting presence in championship contention.
A Historic Start to His Spurs Career
Through his first three seasons, Wembanyama has appeared in 181 regular-season games, including 172 starts. He has career averages of 23.4 points, 11 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 3.46 blocks and 1.14 steals in 30.4 minutes per game.
He has shot 48.4% from the field, 34.2% from 3-point range and 81.7% from the free-throw line.
Wembanyama owns the only two seasons in NBA history in which a player recorded at least 1,500 points, 150 blocks and 100 made 3-pointers. He accomplished the feat as a rookie in 2023-24 and again during the 2025-26 season.
His Rookie of the Year campaign also placed him in a category of his own. Wembanyama became the first NBA player to record more than 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists and 250 blocks while making at least 100 3-pointers in one season. He was also the first rookie selected to the All-Defensive First Team and the youngest player in league history to receive that honor.
From France to the Center of San Antonio Basketball
Born Jan. 4, 2004, in Le Chesnay, France, Wembanyama played professionally for Metropolitans 92 before entering the NBA.
He has also represented the French National Team, helping France win the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Wembanyama averaged 15.8 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, two steals and 1.7 blocks per game during the tournament and was named its Rising Star while earning a place on the All-Star Five.
His international experience also includes appearances in the 2022 FIBA World Cup qualifiers, the 2021 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup and the 2019 FIBA U16 European Championship.
Why the Contract Extension Matters to San Antonio
For local fans and businesses, the Spurs’ decision to extend Wembanyama provides continuity at a moment when the team has returned to national and international prominence.
Spurs basketball has long been woven into San Antonio’s civic identity. Deep postseason runs bring residents together, introduce a new generation of fans to the franchise and draw increased attention to the city. Keeping Wembanyama under contract allows the organization to continue building around a player whose defensive impact, scoring ability and global profile have already changed expectations for the team.
The extension does not guarantee another trip to the NBA Finals, and the Spurs will still need to develop their roster, remain healthy and navigate a competitive Western Conference. It does, however, keep the most important piece of their rebuilding effort in place.
For San Antonio, that means the next chapter of Spurs basketball will continue to be built around a player who has already collected historic achievements but is still only 22 years old.
What Comes Next for the Spurs
The contract extension shifts attention toward how the Spurs will build around Wembanyama during the coming seasons.
After reaching the NBA Finals in his first playoff appearance, San Antonio will enter its next campaign with greater expectations. Player development, roster depth and the team’s ability to manage the demands of another long postseason run will remain important parts of that effort.
For now, the announcement gives Spurs fans a reason to look ahead with confidence. Victor Wembanyama is staying in San Antonio, and the partnership between the young superstar, the franchise and the community is positioned to continue.
