DoorDash and Shopify Launch On-Demand Delivery Tool for Local Shops and Independent Retailers

For independent retailers, making a sale increasingly depends on more than having the right product on the shelf. Customers may discover a neighborhood boutique, gift shop or specialty food store online, compare options from their phones and expect the purchase to arrive quickly—sometimes without ever walking through the front door.

A new integration between DoorDash and Shopify is designed to help brick-and-mortar businesses meet that demand. Shopify merchants with physical stores in the United States can now add their merchandise to the DoorDash marketplace through a native sales channel available in Shopify’s App Store.

The partnership could give local retailers another way to reach nearby customers while allowing them to continue managing products and inventory through Shopify. International expansion is planned in the coming months.

Why On-Demand Local Shopping Matters

The launch comes as online shopping continues to claim a larger share of American retail activity, a trend that accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued as consumers prioritize convenience, speed and digital access. U.S. retail e-commerce sales reached an estimated $289.2 billion during the first quarter of 2024, accounting for about 15.9% of total retail sales, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. E-commerce sales grew 8.6% from the same quarter in 2023, compared with 2.8% growth in total retail sales.

The rise of smartphones, same-day delivery expectations and the expansion of digital marketplaces have reshaped how people shop. Consumers increasingly expect to browse inventory online, compare prices instantly and receive purchases quickly—sometimes within hours. For local retailers, meeting those expectations can be critical to staying competitive with larger national chains and online-only sellers.

At the same time, small businesses remain a foundational part of the U.S. economy. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses account for 99.9% of all U.S. businesses and employ nearly half of the nation’s private workforce. They also create about two-thirds of net new jobs, underscoring their role in economic growth and community stability.

Consumer interest in locally owned businesses also remains significant. American Express reported that shoppers spent an estimated $17 billion at independent businesses during Small Business Saturday in 2023. In related surveys, a majority of consumers said small businesses are essential to their communities, and many reported making at least one in-store purchase when supporting local retailers.

Those numbers do not suggest that physical stores are disappearing. Instead, they highlight a shift toward a blended shopping environment: Consumers still value local stores and face-to-face experiences, but convenience, online discovery and delivery are becoming increasingly important parts of the decision.

Shopify Merchants Can Add Products to DoorDash

Under the new integration, eligible Shopify retailers can activate DoorDash as a sales channel without completing a separate onboarding process or manually uploading an additional product catalog.

Merchants will continue managing their catalog through Shopify. Product listings and available inventory will then update on DoorDash, helping reduce the risk that a customer orders an item that is no longer on the shelf.

DoorDash said the self-service setup is intended to allow qualifying retailers to begin selling through the marketplace within days rather than weeks.

“If it's in your area, it's on DoorDash. That's the promise driving today's news. Local, independent retailers are the heart of local commerce, and they deserve tools that work as hard as they do,” said Mike Goldblatt, vice president of enterprise partnerships at DoorDash. “As the first on-demand marketplace that Shopify merchants can activate directly from their existing Shopify Admin, we're opening the door to retail merchants who can now reach their communities faster than ever.”

The integration may be especially relevant to businesses such as neighborhood gift shops, sporting goods stores, clothing boutiques, specialty grocers and family-owned retailers whose products are well suited to quick local purchases.

A resident looking for a last-minute birthday gift, specialty ingredient, team accessory or household item could discover and order it through DoorDash rather than defaulting to a national online retailer.

A Potential Advantage for Neighborhood Businesses

For small businesses, the value of the partnership may extend beyond delivery. Being listed on a widely used marketplace could introduce local stores to customers who were previously unaware that the businesses—or their products—were nearby.

DoorDash reported in its 2025 Economic Impact Report that 90% of merchants surveyed said the platform helped them reach consumers they otherwise would not have reached. The company also said 85% of surveyed consumers believed DoorDash made it easier to support local businesses. Because those findings were commissioned and published by DoorDash, they should be viewed as company research rather than independent market data.

“Merchants want to sell wherever their customers are, and increasingly that means meeting them with speed and convenience,” said Atlee Clark, vice president of partnerships at Shopify. “This integration puts local retailers in front of millions of DoorDash shoppers and turns same-day demand into sales, all managed inside Shopify.”

For family-owned stores with limited staff, maintaining separate product databases and manually updating inventory across multiple services can be time-consuming. Automatic synchronization could lower that operational burden, although merchants will still need to evaluate platform costs, staffing demands, order preparation and whether on-demand delivery makes sense for their margins.

What Shoppers and Retailers Can Expect

Consumers may begin seeing more non-restaurant businesses appear in the DoorDash app as Shopify retailers activate the new sales channel. Availability will depend on whether individual merchants participate and whether delivery service is offered in their area.

For local stores, the tool creates another option rather than a replacement for in-person shopping. A boutique may use delivery for last-minute gifts while continuing to offer the personal service and carefully selected merchandise that draw customers into the store. A specialty food retailer may reach households seeking same-day ingredients, while a sporting goods shop could fill an urgent need before a practice or weekend game.

The broader question will be whether access to a larger digital audience produces enough additional sales to justify the expenses and logistics associated with marketplace delivery. Results are likely to vary by product category, neighborhood density, delivery demand and the size of each retailer’s operation.

Still, the integration reflects a clear shift in local commerce. Supporting a neighborhood business no longer always requires visiting the storefront. Increasingly, it may mean finding that business online, ordering through a familiar app and having a locally stocked product delivered from a store only a few miles away.

Merchants interested in participating can find the DoorDash Sales Channel app through Shopify’s App Store.
