New Downtown Landmark: The Monarch San Antonio Opens in Hemisfair District After More Than a Decade in Development
After more than a decade of planning and development, The Monarch San Antonio has officially opened its doors in downtown San Antonio, introducing a new 17-story hotel to the rapidly evolving Hemisfair District. The $185 million project places visitors and residents just steps from the San Antonio River Walk, the Alamo and some of the city’s most visited cultural landmarks, reinforcing downtown’s growing reputation as a destination for hospitality, dining and community gathering.
Owned and operated by San Antonio-based Zachry Hospitality, the new hotel reflects both a long-standing local connection and a broader vision for downtown’s future. The property stands on the same site where H.B. Zachry played a role in shaping the 1968 World’s Fair, tying the development to a family legacy that spans more than a century of investment and civic involvement in San Antonio.
“We’re proud to introduce The Monarch as a hotel that reflects the Zachry family’s longstanding connection to San Antonio and their belief in its future,” said Rick Slutter, managing director of Zachry Hospitality. “This site carries deep significance for the family, and we approached it with a sense of responsibility to honor what has stood here before while contributing something lasting to the city’s next chapter. The Monarch is an investment in downtown’s continued evolution and a place designed for how people want to gather, stay and experience San Antonio today.”
A Hotel Designed Around San Antonio’s Natural Story
The Monarch San Antonio, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, brings 200 guestrooms—including 28 suites—to downtown. Curio Collection is a global portfolio of nearly 200 hotels known for their distinctive design and strong connection to local destinations, offering travelers unique experiences while still providing the benefits of Hilton’s broader hospitality network and loyalty program.
Architecture and interior design for the hotel were led by San Antonio-based Overland Partners, with interiors by The Gettys Group and KBAA. The design concept draws inspiration from the monarch butterflies that migrate through South Texas each year, a theme reflected in sculptural architecture, flowing interiors and open-air spaces that emphasize transformation and movement.
Inside, guests encounter sweeping arches, vertical wood ribbon features and a floating staircase that anchors the lobby. Natural light and earth-toned materials carry through the guestrooms, where amenities include Italian SFERRA linens, Nespresso coffee systems and technology-enabled workspaces designed for both business and leisure travelers.

Dining Concepts Bring New Culinary Destinations Downtown
Beyond accommodations, the hotel introduces several chef-driven restaurants and dining concepts that add to the culinary landscape of downtown San Antonio.
Executive Chef Jae H. Lee leads the hotel’s culinary program, which focuses on technique-driven cooking, premium meats and seafood and ingredients sourced from regional markets.
Oak & Amber, the hotel’s signature restaurant located off the lobby, centers its menu around a mesquite-and-oak hearth where chefs prepare dishes over Texas post oak and pecan wood. The menu draws inspiration from Texas ranching traditions, Gulf seafood and regional produce, with a seafood and steak program that includes a 28-day dry-aged Texas ribeye carved tableside.
Seventeen stories above the city, Aleteo, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant and bar, offers views of the San Antonio skyline alongside a menu influenced by Yucatán cuisine. Dishes such as aguachiles, ceviches and house-made tortillas made from imported corn reflect bold flavors and traditional techniques.
Meanwhile, The Nectarie Café, a French-inspired bistro located near the lobby, serves breakfast and lunch with La Colombe coffee, rare loose-leaf teas and a pastry program rooted in classic laminated dough techniques. A takeout window is also designed to serve nearby park visitors and downtown workers.
Public Art and Gathering Spaces Anchor the District
The hotel also introduces a new public art landmark intended to become a visual centerpiece for the Hemisfair District.
La Mariposa, a $2 million sculptural pavilion installed near the property, features three illuminated wings constructed with stained glass panels that reflect surrounding landscapes and park spaces. Integrated LED lighting runs through more than three miles of the structure and shifts colors throughout the year during holidays and city celebrations.
Visible from the rooftop terrace and surrounding streets, the installation is designed to serve as a gathering point for visitors and residents alike.

Wellness, Events and Community Connections
Inside the hotel, wellness amenities include a full-service spa with botanical-inspired treatments, infrared sauna sessions, cold plunges and IV vitamin therapies, as well as a fitness studio equipped with neuroactive training equipment. A third-floor pool deck with cabanas offers an elevated retreat above downtown.
For meetings and events, the property includes 15,000 square feet of event space, including eight venues and the 5,000-square-foot Meridian Ballroom. With natural light and modern technology, the spaces are designed to accommodate everything from corporate conferences to weddings and community gatherings.
A New Chapter for Downtown San Antonio Hospitality
With room rates starting at $398 per night, The Monarch San Antonio enters a competitive hospitality landscape as downtown continues to attract new visitors, conventions and cultural events.
For residents and visitors alike, the opening signals another step in the ongoing transformation of the Hemisfair District, an area that has evolved in recent years into a hub for parks, restaurants, public art and cultural programming.
As new developments continue to reshape the city center, projects like The Monarch highlight the growing role of design-driven hotels and mixed-use destinations in downtown San Antonio’s long-term growth.
