New Braunfels Public Library Launches 2026 Summer Reading Program with Family-Friendly Events, Prizes and Activities

June 04 2026

Families across New Braunfels have a new reason to visit their local library this summer as the New Braunfels Public Library officially kicks off its 2026 Summer Reading Program on June 6, inviting residents of all ages to spend the season exploring books, attending community events and earning rewards along the way.

Centered around the theme “Unearth a Story,” this year’s program encourages children, teens and adults to discover new ideas, expand their imaginations and connect with others through reading and hands-on activities. Running through Aug. 8, the initiative combines literacy, entertainment and community engagement in a way that makes summer learning accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

For families looking to keep children engaged while school is out, the program offers a variety of free activities designed to encourage reading while creating memorable experiences throughout the summer.

“The New Braunfels Public Library System has an amazing lineup of programs for the community this summer,” said Library Director Cole Johnson. “Be on the lookout throughout the summer for a variety of events for kids and adults alike. Programs this year includes wildlife shows, sensory playtimes, movie parties, swordplay exhibitions, science demonstrations, and specialty story times. It’s easy for the whole family to participate together and get reading this summer. Just pick up a game card to get started!”

Why Summer Reading Matters

Summer reading programs have long been recognized as an effective way to help students maintain literacy skills during the school break. Research from the National Summer Learning Association and other educational organizations has found that regular reading during summer months can help reduce learning loss and improve academic readiness when students return to school.

Programs such as New Braunfels' Summer Reading Program also provide opportunities for social interaction, creativity and lifelong learning beyond traditional classroom settings.

For growing communities like New Braunfels, public libraries continue to serve as important gathering spaces where residents can access educational resources, cultural programming and family-friendly activities at little or no cost.

What Happens Next

The Summer Reading Program officially begins June 6 and continues through Aug. 8. Residents can pick up game cards at participating locations and begin earning prizes while attending events throughout the season.

As New Braunfels continues to grow, programs like these help strengthen community connections while fostering a love of reading that can last well beyond the summer months.
