Local Muralist Beautifies Traffic Control Cabinets in Katy Area

April 19 2023

If you have driven on Franz Road or Kingsland in Katy over the past week, you might have noticed a couple of colorful murals that have been added to once dull traffic control cabinets.

In partnership with Keep Katy Beautiful, native Houstonian and muralist Emily Ding has transformed two simple traffic control cabinets into beautiful works of art, each showcasing elements that are near and dear to the hearts of Katy residents. The first planned art installation was added to a traffic control cabinet at the intersection at Avenue D and Franz. Since this cabinet is located near the new 3B Learning Center on Franz, Keep Katy Beautiful selected a theme that showcases birds, butterflies and bees, in addition to the state bird of Texas, the mockingbird.

The second mural was installed at the corner of Kingsland and Pin Oak, which features a beautiful bouquet of Texas wildflowers. Both murals were treated with a special anti-graffiti coating to protect the artwork.

Ding has completed murals across the globe, including the Greater Houston Area. Drawing inspiration from flora and fauna, Ding's large-scale work is characterized by expressive animals and figures that come to life through bold color gradients and a fluid, painterly style. Her renderings of Texas wildlife and wildflowers capture the natural beauty found in the City of Katy for all to enjoy. To view more of Ding's work, visit her Instagram page.
