Klein, Tomball, and Magnolia ISDs Continue Monitoring Dangerous Weather: School Closures and Safety Updates Amid Winter Storm

January 25 2026

As bitter cold grips the Greater Houston area and Southeast Texas, school districts like Klein ISD, Tomball ISD, and Magnolia ISD are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of students, staff, and families during this severe winter storm.

According to the latest winter weather update from the National Weather Service – Houston/Galveston, temperatures have dropped into the low 20s in areas west of the Brazos River, with icy road conditions expected to linger into Monday night and Tuesday morning. The region remains under an Extreme Cold Warning and Ice Storm Warning, with dangerously low wind chills between 0°F and 15°F, hard freezes, and icy travel conditions that continue to pose safety risks.

Klein ISD: Decision by 3 PM Monday

Klein ISD officials shared a message of caution and community care on Sunday, stating, “While students and staff remain at home on Monday, we will continue to assess our schools, facilities, and local roads to ensure conditions are safe for a possible return on Tuesday, January 27.” The district has committed to announcing its decision for Tuesday’s operations no later than 3 p.m. on Monday, January 26. In the meantime, they are working closely with emergency management teams and local weather experts.

Tomball ISD: Mid-Day Weather Briefing Planned

Similarly, Tomball ISD emphasized the need for ongoing evaluation, stating they have not yet finalized a decision regarding school for Tuesday. District leaders plan to participate in a regional weather briefing with area superintendents on Monday afternoon. “The safety of our students, families, staff, and community remains our top priority,” the district stated in a weather update.

Magnolia ISD: Closure Confirmed for Monday

Magnolia ISD previously confirmed that schools would be closed on Monday, January 26, in response to the ongoing winter storm and dangerous travel conditions. District leaders continue to monitor weather developments and will notify families of any additional changes through multiple channels including email, text messages, automated calls, Facebook, and the district’s website.

Icy Roads, Prolonged Cold and Power Risks

According to the NWS briefing, most of the region is experiencing a prolonged freeze, with many areas seeing more than 24 consecutive hours of sub-freezing temperatures. Some northern counties may experience nearly three full days below freezing, creating extended hazards for road travel and increasing the risk of frozen pipes.

The advisory warns that icy conditions on bridges, rural roads, and elevated surfaces will likely remain into Tuesday morning. High winds, combined with freezing rain accumulations of up to 0.5 inches, could result in tree damage and localized power outages throughout affected counties.

Stay Safe and Stay Connected

Residents are urged to follow these key cold weather safety measures:

  • Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary
  • Bring pets indoors
  • Protect pipes and cover exposed outdoor plumbing
  • Check on elderly neighbors or those who may need assistance

Families are encouraged to stay connected with their local school district for the most up-to-date announcements regarding closures or delays. Each district is making decisions in real-time, informed by local emergency authorities, meteorologists, and roadway conditions.
