Klein Oak High School Educator Named Texas’ 2026 James Madison Fellow

May 26 2026

Klein ISD is celebrating a milestone that is drawing attention well beyond the classroom. Peter Wood, Social Studies Department Chair at Klein Oak High School, has been named the 2026 James Madison Fellow for the State of Texas — one of the nation’s highest honors for secondary social studies educators.

The recognition not only highlights Wood’s work in civic education and constitutional studies, but also reflects the growing reputation of Klein ISD’s social studies programs as the district continues investing in academic excellence and student engagement across northwest Harris County.

Each year, the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation selects outstanding educators from across the country to pursue advanced graduate study focused on the history, principles, and development of the United States Constitution. The fellowship includes awards of up to $24,000 and, when funding allows, one educator is selected from each state. In 2026, Wood was chosen as Texas’ sole recipient.

For families in Klein ISD, the recognition represents more than an individual achievement. It speaks to the caliber of educators leading classrooms throughout the district and the emphasis being placed on preparing students to think critically about government, history, and civic responsibility.

“Mr. Wood’s selection as the 2026 James Madison Fellow for the State of Texas is an extraordinary honor and a reflection of the exceptional educators we are blessed to have in Klein ISD,” said Klein ISD Chief of Human Resources Dr. Bob Anderson. “His passion for civic education, commitment to student learning, and leadership at Klein Oak High School demonstrate the meaningful impact our educators have in preparing students to think critically, engage thoughtfully, and understand the foundations of our Nation. We are incredibly proud to celebrate Mr. Wood and his well-deserved recognition.”

A Rare Honor for Klein ISD

Wood’s selection marks only the second time a Klein ISD educator has earned the James Madison Fellowship. The first was Klein ISD educator Meagan Farrow, who received the distinction in 2022.

Having two educators receive the prestigious fellowship within four years is a notable achievement for the district and reinforces the strength of Klein ISD’s social studies instruction at a time when civic literacy and constitutional education continue to be major national conversations.

The fellowship will take Wood to Washington, D.C., this summer for an intensive four-week graduate course at Georgetown University centered on American constitutionalism.

“I am fortunate enough to be the Senior Fellow for the entire state of Texas and will travel to DC this summer for a four-week graduate course at Georgetown University to study the Foundations of American Constitutionalism,” Wood said. “During that time, we will visit historical buildings, hear lectures from constitutional scholars, and even attend a private meeting with a Supreme Court Justice. I am beyond excited to be in DC for the 250th Anniversary celebration and hope to complete my master's in political science via Sam Houston State next May.”

Why This Matters for Klein Oak Students

For students at Klein Oak High School, opportunities like this often have a direct classroom impact. Educators who participate in nationally recognized fellowships frequently bring back expanded curriculum resources, deeper subject expertise, and firsthand experiences that enrich classroom instruction.

District leaders said Wood’s continued graduate work and participation in the James Madison Fellowship program will further strengthen the mentorship and leadership he provides both at Klein Oak High School and across Klein ISD.

As communities across Texas continue placing greater focus on civic understanding, constitutional literacy, and student preparedness for public life, recognitions like this also help position Klein ISD as a district investing in long-term academic quality and educator development.

The honor arrives during a period when many public school districts are working to recruit and retain high-performing teachers, making national recognitions especially meaningful for local communities, parents, and students alike.

Klein ISD congratulated Wood on what district officials described as an outstanding and well-deserved achievement.
