For many children, seeing a police vehicle up close or meeting a K-9 officer will be the highlight of the evening. For their parents and neighbors, the real value may be the chance to talk with the people who serve their community before an emergency ever happens.

The Katy Police Department will host National Night Out 2026 from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, at Katy City Park, located at 5850 Franz Road. Admission is free, and the event is open to the Katy community.

National Night Out is built around a straightforward but important idea: safer communities begin with stronger relationships. By bringing residents, police officers, local businesses and community organizations together in a relaxed setting, the annual event creates space for conversations that do not happen during a traffic stop, emergency call or other stressful situation.

What Families Can Expect at Katy National Night Out

The Katy Police Department has planned an evening filled with free food, entertainment and hands-on activities for guests of all ages. Families can explore emergency vehicles and police equipment while learning more about the different teams and resources that help keep Katy safe.

Activities and attractions will include:

• Free hot dogs, popcorn and ice cream
• Emergency vehicles and police equipment
• Games and family activities
• Face painting
• A balloon artist
• Music and entertainment
• Local vendors and community partners
• Free giveaways
• Public safety information and resources

Residents will also be able to meet Katy Police Department officers, members of the Special Response Team, motor officers and Officer Hopps. K-9 officers Sky and Mac are also expected to join the celebration.

Building Connections Beyond an Emergency

While the food and activities make National Night Out a fun family event, its larger purpose is to strengthen trust and communication between residents and local law enforcement.

Meeting an officer, asking a safety question or learning about local police resources in a welcoming environment can make future interactions feel more familiar. The event also gives officers an opportunity to hear directly from the residents, families and business owners they serve.

Those everyday connections can play an important role in neighborhood safety. When residents know whom to contact, understand available resources and feel comfortable sharing concerns, the entire community is better equipped to work together.

Katy residents are encouraged to bring the children, invite their neighbors and spend the evening meeting local officers and community partners. With dinner, dessert, games and activities all included, National Night Out offers families a free and meaningful way to connect with the people who help serve and protect Katy.
