Katy ISD Opens Gifted and Talented Screening Through Oct. 9 for Grades 1–4 Families Seeking Academic Enrichment
Katy ISD is inviting families to explore advanced academic opportunities through its Gifted and Talented (GT) screening process, which is now open for 1st through 4th grade students. The screening window closes on Wednesday, October 9, 2025, and interested parents are encouraged to submit a Parent Observation Checklist via the MyKaty GT App before the deadline.
Designed to support students who demonstrate high intellectual potential and academic performance, Katy ISD’s GT program continues to be a sought-after opportunity for enrichment across the district. Identified elementary students participate in a once-weekly GT pullout session, where they work with certified GT teachers on activities that promote critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity.
“For parents of high-achieving students, the GT screening can assess if their child is ready for more challenging coursework,” said Danielle Sanchez, Katy ISD Director of GT and Advanced Academics. “The process gives students a chance to engage with peers who share their academic drive and to grow in new ways.”
How GT Testing Works
Katy ISD uses a multi-step approach to identify gifted learners. The process includes:
- Standardized test scores
- Parent and teacher observation checklists
- Classroom performance reviews
- Cognitive ability assessments
This holistic approach aims to ensure that a variety of factors—not just test scores—help determine a student’s eligibility.

According to the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), identifying students for GT programs isn’t just about accelerated academics—it’s about giving students access to educational settings that match their abilities. Without appropriate challenges, gifted students may become disengaged, underperform, or experience social-emotional strain from not feeling intellectually stimulated.
The NAGC emphasizes that when gifted learners are supported through specialized instruction, they show increased motivation, higher self-esteem, and long-term academic and career success.
Who Should Be Screened?
Students who show signs of exceptional understanding, quick learning, deep curiosity, or unusual problem-solving skills may benefit from GT screening. Common signs of giftedness at the elementary level include:
- Rapid grasp of new concepts
- Advanced vocabulary for age
- Passion for specific topics
- Creative or abstract thinking
- High levels of self-motivation
Parents who suspect their child may be working above grade level or needing more academic challenge are encouraged to submit a referral.
Key Dates and Info Session
To help families navigate the process, Katy ISD will host a virtual GT/Advanced Academics Program Information Session at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, via Microsoft Teams. The session will be available in both English and Spanish. and will provide an overview of the program, screening process, and timelines.
