Katy City Council Meeting Tonight: Key Decisions on Police Leadership, Road Closures, and Major Projects

The City of Katy is hosting its Regular City Council Meeting tonight, Monday, December 9, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. at Katy City Hall, located at 901 Ave C, Katy, Texas 77493. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for those who wish to arrive early, and residents are encouraged to attend in person or tune in via the live stream.

Key Agenda Highlights:

  1. Recognition of Katy Police Department – The meeting will begin with a special presentation by Chief Kenney Semour from the Texas Police Chiefs Association, recognizing the Katy Police Department for earning re-accreditation under the Texas Best Practices Program. This is a significant achievement that underscores the department’s commitment to maintaining high standards in law enforcement.

  2. New Police Chief Appointment – The Council will also consider an ordinance appointing Bryon T. Woytek as the new Police Chief of the City of Katy, Texas. This is an important decision for the future leadership of the department and the safety of the community.

  3. Road Closures and Events – Several upcoming events requiring road closures will be discussed:

    • Shottenkirk KIA Racing & Neilson Powless Roll to Bellville on December 21, 2024, with road closures along East 5th Street, Ave D, and Morton Road from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m..

    • Katy Half Marathon & 5K on February 8, 2025, near Katy Mills Mall and Typhoon Texas.

    • 2025 Bike MS: Texas MS 150 on April 26-27, 2025, which will involve the use of Katy City Park as a rest stop.

  4. Approval of Major Projects:

    • 2024 Heights, Airline, and Drexel Drainage Improvements Project – A resolution will be considered to award a $5.1 million contract for drainage improvements, aimed at addressing flooding issues and improving infrastructure.

    • Pitts Road Detention Pond Expansion – The Council will review a bid for $1.62 million to expand the Pitts Road Detention Pond, funded through the Community Development Block Grant.

    • Multiple engineering services contracts are also on the table for various improvement projects, including street overlays, water line replacements, and storm sewer improvements.

  5. Surplus Property Sale – The Council will consider a resolution to declare certain items, including vehicles and equipment from the Katy Police, Public Works, and Social Services departments, as surplus property for sale or disposal.

  6. Budget Amendments – An ordinance will be considered to approve Budget Amendment No. 3 for the Fiscal Year 2024-2025, which includes the use of both General Fund Reserves and Enterprise Fund Reserves for various ongoing projects, including drainage and detention improvements.
