Judson AFJROTC Cadets Join Converse First Responders in 9/11 Memorial Stadium Climb
For students who were born years after Sept. 11, 2001, remembering the day can mean learning history they never personally witnessed. At D.W. Rutledge Stadium, Judson High School AFJROTC cadets marked this year's anniversary in a much more physical way.
Cadets joined Converse first responders Sept. 11 for a 9/11 Memorial Stadium Climb, an event designed to honor those who died and recognize the sacrifices made by first responders during the terrorist attacks 25 years ago. Judson High School published its account of the event Sept. 21.
Climbing in Remembrance
The stadium climb was designed to symbolize the 110 stories that firefighters faced inside the World Trade Center towers.
According to Judson High School, cadets completed three sets of bleachers on the home side of D.W. Rutledge Stadium alongside Converse firefighters. They tackled five sets on the visitor side with Converse police officers.
The exercise required more than simply showing up for a ceremony. Students worked their way through the stadium while encouraging one another to continue, giving the remembrance a physical dimension for a generation with no firsthand memory of the attacks.
Students and First Responders Remember Together
The involvement of Converse first responders also connected the national anniversary with people serving the community today. Firefighters and police officers climbed alongside students rather than observing from the sidelines.
For the Judson AFJROTC program, the ceremony also offered students a lesson in service, teamwork and remembrance as they prepare for their own futures.
Twenty-five years after the attacks, events such as the Converse memorial climb are helping pass that history to another generation while giving local students a chance to honor first responders alongside the men and women serving their own community today.
