How Residents in Governors Place Can Sign Up for Harris County Flood Alerts Ahead of Heavy Rain and Hurricane Season

As families across Governors Place prepare for Memorial Day weekend gatherings, travel plans, and the unofficial start of summer, local emergency officials are urging residents to keep a close eye on the weather.

The Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM) is monitoring a storm system expected to move slowly across the region through the holiday weekend, bringing the potential for heavy rainfall, street flooding, and rapidly changing conditions across Harris County and surrounding areas.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for much of the South Texas coastline, including Harris County, through 7 p.m. Monday. Forecasts indicate widespread rainfall totals of 2 to 5 inches are possible, with isolated areas potentially receiving even higher amounts. For residents in Governors Place, that means staying alert for localized flooding along streets, creeks, bayous, and low-lying areas — especially during periods of intense rainfall.

The timing also serves as an important reminder that hurricane season officially begins June 1, making now a critical opportunity for families in Governors Place to review emergency plans, update supplies, and ensure they can receive weather alerts quickly if severe conditions develop this summer.

Heavy Rainfall Could Create Hazardous Travel Conditions

Officials are encouraging residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and to remain cautious on roadways throughout the weekend.

Street flooding can develop quickly in the Houston area, particularly in neighborhoods near drainage channels, creeks, or low-lying intersections. Drivers are reminded to follow the longstanding safety message: “Turn around, don’t drown.”

Before heading out, residents can monitor road conditions using the Houston TranStar live traffic map and follow updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies.

Even short bursts of intense rainfall can cause bayous, creeks, and streams to rise quickly. For many longtime residents across Greater Houston, flooding concerns are never far from mind during late spring and early summer weather events. That’s why emergency officials continue emphasizing preparation before conditions worsen.

Flood Warning Alerts Can Help Residents Stay Ahead of Changing Conditions

One of the most important tools available to residents in Governors Place is the Harris County Flood Control District Flood Warning System, which provides real-time monitoring of rainfall and water levels throughout the region.

The system uses a network of strategically placed gage stations across Harris County and neighboring counties to track changing conditions and help warn residents of potential flooding risks.

Officials are encouraging residents to sign up for alerts through FWSAlerts.org to receive timely flood and weather notifications directly to their phones and mobile devices.

“Preparedness starts before the storm arrives,” the Flood Control District stated in its public advisory encouraging residents to enroll in the system ahead of severe weather season.

Residents can also monitor real-time bayou and creek conditions through the Flood Warning System online platform, which becomes especially valuable during prolonged rain events like the one forecast for the holiday weekend.

Hurricane Season Begins June 1

While this weekend’s rainfall threat is tied to a separate storm system, emergency officials say it also serves as an early reminder that hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through November 30.

For residents in Governors Place, now is the time to review emergency kits, check insurance coverage, refill important medications, and make plans for communication and evacuation if needed later this season.

Officials also recommend enabling Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on smartphones so critical warnings from the National Weather Service can be received immediately during dangerous weather situations.

HCOHSEM encourages residents to stay informed through ReadyHarris.org, ReadyHarris Alerts, ReadyHarris Accessible Alerts, and official social media channels throughout the holiday weekend and into hurricane season.

As weather patterns across the Gulf Coast continue shifting into the summer months, emergency managers say preparation and awareness remain some of the community’s strongest tools for staying safe.
